1) Am I wrong to think that one of America's biggest threats are right wing Evangelical Christians.
South of Winchester, VA off of I-81 there are three huge crosses that are just plain creepy and on the side
a barn in the country somebody has a painting of Trump and Jesus with their arms around each other
along with a bunch of American, confederate, and Trump flags. Another "Trump Country" place had all the
Christian shit, rebel flags, American flags, Trump and anti-Biden stuff but he also had something about the
problems in Cuba are Joe Biden's fault.
2) And this got me thinking is Trump still working for Putin? Because by Trump's continuation of stirring
up shit weakens America by dividing us and that is what Putin wanted. I wonder if Trump is still in contact
with Russia/Putin and is getting his marching orders from them. (Trump does owe them tons of money.)
Or did the heat just get to me?

(61,588 posts)Apparently they were put up by an itinerant "Johnny Appleseed" of cross installers back in the 1960s. People repaint them. I've always thought they were kind of neat in a folk art sort of way.
The barns with Trump and Jesus are a whole different thing.

(61,588 posts)I've driven that route many times over the years and got used to the crosses. I thought it was cool to hear about them on DU!
I agree with your overall point, though. We have a serious problem.

(70,489 posts)... and left a food pantry to feed the needy in S.W. OH. OTOH these creeps seem to have
made the least Christian man I can think into some kind of God. I might be wrong but
even if they were shown 100% proof that Trump was an active Russian asset, Putin installed
him in order to weaken America from with in, and that Melania was his handler they would
still be good w/"the Donald."
BTW how many Bible Camps have had to be shut down this summer because of C-19?

Coffindaffer's Crosses
Coffindaffer's Crosses in a pasture near Pluto, West Virginia in Raleigh County.
Crosses, crosses everywhere! Or so it would seem traveling through West Virginia.
Every few miles, groups of three crosses stand like sentinels along its roadways a high gold cross flanked by two smaller light blue crosses. Most travelers recognize them as monuments to the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth, a central event in Christianity. But have you ever wondered where these crosses come from? Why they were raised? And who is responsible?
Bernard Coffindaffer, a Marine veteran and a native of Craigsville, West Virginia, was the man behind the crosses. It was his desire to remind people that Jesus had been crucified at Calvary to forgive their sins and that hed be coming back again.
After leaving the military and earning a business degree from the University of Charleston, Coffindaffer worked in the oil industry. though he made his fortune founding a coal-washing business. After undergoing two heart by-pass operations, he liquidated his business.
Two years later he had a vision that sparked the building of the groups of crosses and spent the remainder of his life and money erecting 1,864 sets in 29 states, in the District of Columbia, and in Zambia and the Philippines. Land owners donated the sites, and Coffindaffer funded the construction. West Virginia was home to 352 sets of crosses more than any other state. Most are visible from major highways, though some are tucked away in remote locations. He established the first set outside his hometown in Nicholas County.
All the crosses are made of Douglas Fir and weigh 400 pounds. At the height of his ministry, nine full-time employees were helping erect the crosses. His non-profit organization, "Crosses of Mercy Cast Thy Bread Inc.," was run from the basement of his home.

As for the rest, it's the First Amendment at work. There's a famous barn next to I-5 near Centralia, Washington.

(11,949 posts)At least to democracy.
They now realize they have lost the battle for hegemony. So they are fine with changing the playing field to insure only people who agree with them can vote.
They may value democracy, but they value religious supremacy more. And racial supremacy is often in the mix since they see Christianity as a white religion despite the fact the one they hold up as god was not really their idea of white.

(17,528 posts)Merging religion and politics is and has always been a great danger to the people. It doesn't matter what religion, because if whatever "God" is on "our" side, then there is no action action we can take against the sinners, including murder, rape and torture, that is unholy.
The Right believes that Trump has been sent by God to save our nation, therefore anyone who resists him is a heretic. (and you know what happens to heretics) All I can say is that which ever god sent Trump exercised very poor judgement and should be stripped of his/her title. No more offerings, no more praise for you!

(28,787 posts)second question, I don't know but would not doubt it. though i think at this point putin may have cut him loose and trump is just kind of talking to the walls now.
I would also mention that I believe that rural VA is a hotbed of meth and painkiller abuse and addiction. but i actually don't know the geography there so no real clue about where you were.

(15,124 posts)would be a nice vacation. I can't recall a more disgusting or miserable trip.
Yes, it is a very beautiful area. Some of the views were breathtaking. But, it seemed that something like four out of five houses had their road-facing yards cluttered with multiple large TRUMP campaign signs and our Prius with Clinton and other Democratic stickers drew hostile glares each time we stopped for gas or a burger. Clerks were silently hostile and took our money without a smile or a "Thank you! Come again!"
We passed an ILLUMINATED 12 foot cross flanked with TRUMP signs in the yard of a small house one evening and then encountered three never-heard-of-this-denomination churches within the next half mile. We stopped at a local barbecue joint for dinner and were almost afraid to eat our food by the time it arrived as the other customers made it clear we were not welcome.
In one motel, we shared an elevator with a woman who began loudly "speaking in tongues" while another couple raised their arms and nodded while repeating "Praise Jesus!".
Who needs that crap?
Sorry to say it, but we will never return.

(2,636 posts)Not far from there, also on 81, is a large metal building, old corrugated metal hut, great big letters facing the highway,"Jesus Saves! We Buy Guns"
Not sure if some man of Latino heritage named Jesus is saving them money on guns, or what....
We told my niece when she was about 5 that people put giant T's in their yards. She saw those three, and asked if they stuttered.
Yes, it's creepy. I lived in California for ~45 years. NEVER saw that shit. It's all over Appalachia, from WNC where I am now, to Charleston SC and WV. Smacks of desperation and showiness--my cross is bigger than yours.
But, Jesus will buy your guns....

(36,023 posts)Systems that have comforted Americans aren't necessarily threats unless those systems make it mandatory for you to join. (Their members think our side is manipulating them to join the smartypants sciency side). If they're live and let live systems, and don't get their members to see you as a threat, don't see them as a threat.
Re Putin, he's gonna do well in the money department with or without dirtydonnie. If you think you should give Putin/Trump another minute of your valuable life, dump some creek water on your head 'til no more questions hit you.

(58,785 posts)when exacerbated, are causing some to become grave threats to civilization.
Religion can draw, organize and augment them, but it doesn't create. Our most pernicious influences are external, and those who gather influence and mold it. Plus, not all nazi types belong to a religion. And not all evangelicals are nazi types. And there aren't enough evangelicals to win national elections. They're a minority, even on the right. So, they've become awful, but they're not the explanation.
You can't get more basic than looking to geography, which strongly influences the forms societies and religions take. Just look at a political map of the world for confirmation that around the planet societies, and religions, in hot climates tend to develop and remain more conservative than ones in temperate climates. Then check that huge factor against a political map of the U.S.
Then maybe wonder about what global warming might have to do with the rise of RW extremism and nihilistic behaviors around the planet.
