To be fair, I wouldn't mind seeing some tennis, but I'm not confident that it will be broadcast.

(63,221 posts)Although I do find some Olympic sports (gymnastics, skiing, skating, etc.) slightly more interesting than other televised sports (football, baseball, basketball, golf, etc.).

(19,348 posts)It's a hard place to be for men.
I will never give ANY consideration to violent "sports" as there is enough suffering in this world we all deal with.
Perhaps swimming (as I do swim).
Gymnastics should be suspended until there is meaningful reform to the program.
There is too much hero worship sports. Most sports stars don't give a damn about you and I.

(16,336 posts)did watch the men's cycling road race and might watch the tennis medal matches, but that's it. Usually I wouldn't be riveted on the summer games anyway, prefer winter. But this year, way less interested than usual.

(2,883 posts)The pandemic is really not conducive to the show...those huge empty stadiums, some masking up some not, some vaccinated some not...bit of a clusterf**k (imo). Watching on NBC is like one big commercial, the coverage is spotty and the background info just doesn't feel genuine...I even bought the Peacock premium for one month and find it no better, I wanted it to watch replays of events I missed but they are delaying the replays for a couple of days...lame...

(34,135 posts)A long time ago.
NBC would put out schedules of when events would happen but not actually show them at those times so for those of us setting our VCRs to record events that were supposed to be broadcast at 3 AM, we'd get some other, totally unrelated event.
Also, unless the US had a chance of getting a medal, NBC wouldn't cover the sport at all. I wanted to see dressage and three day eventing equestrian events - nope, nothing.
A friend who had a big satellite dish - that's how long ago this was - subscribed to their "special more complete" coverage only broadcast over satellite. Same deal, she'd set her VCR according to the schedule they gave paying customers, but they never followed their own schedule. She ended up going after NBC and eventually got her money back since not one event that she wanted to see was broadcast at the time given - or at all as far as she could find out.
I have Beta tapes of Olympic equestrian events from the 1980s but I will not even turn to the channels showing the Olympics anymore because they simply will not cover the odd or non US dominated sports. I will look them up on Youtube once the entire thing is over and done with.

(2,564 posts)I've never been a sports fan: the only one that ever interested me was fencing, and one rarely sees that televised, even in the Olympics.
Back when my legs worked better, I played Cyrano de Bergerac and employed Renaissance rapier and left-hand dagger style swordplay. That was something the Midwestern audiences were not familiar with in the Seventies.

Although having the camera on the bus with US team heading to the opening ceremony was a horrible move. Complete waste of time that took away from the ceremony its self. 💀🤙

(10,132 posts)Watched some dancing horses yesterday. And men's gymnastics can be interesting, although they could add some more events that didn't depend solely on upper body strength. If the stars align and I happen to be free (or remember to record) the high jumps and pole vaults I'll watch those.
I mostly watch with the sound off. Do the announcers have a clause in their contracts that means their pay is docked if they go for more than 5 seconds without one of them opening their mouth?

I don't like sports .
To me sports is not news.
Keep it to the huge amounts of sport channels on cable.
To me those sport channels should be a choice, in cable channel lineups not taking up slots for channels I would want.

(14,952 posts)The filler to content ratio is way to high to keep my interest, even in sports I might otherwise watch. And even when it is actually the sporting event, half the time it is a low-drama preliminary round/heat.
Then add to that they broadcast a huge amount of sports I cannot stand (basically anything where a judge gives a score).
It's awful.

(5,164 posts)Mostly I watch a bit of skiing/ skating and winter olympics and that is it. I used to watch gymnastics but for some reason it seems boring now. It does seem out of touch to be having an olympics with everything going on and allowing unvaxed people to participate is crazy imo.
I do like sports and the Olympics. Since I don't have a television, I go to YouTube and watch the recaps - knowing who won but still like the reactions of the winners. Love the swimming and diving and gymnastics and the track and field and most of the events.

(32,617 posts)I did see some tennis yesterday morning, and perhaps again this morning.
I'm getting the Olympics NBC channel, plus NBC Sports channel, plus regular NBC which is also showing a lot of Olympics - so I've been flipping around those 3 channels. Trying to catch as many different events as I can. However the Olympic Channel is showing LIVE events starting at 5 .m., and the other 2 are showing events that were delayed for prime time showing. It gets a little confusing.

(1,303 posts)The know-it-alls main currency is how this or that athlete has screwed up. They love sticking their microphone in a competitors face who hasnt met expectations .and asking them how they feel about their failure. Like an Olympic Silver or Bronze is a failure
And dont get me started on the medal count and jingoism bs.
