I get the impression that Liz Cheney may have heard or seen something that indicates that trump and/or other repug leaders helped plan and organize the Jan 6 attack on Congress.
Of course this already seems very likely to most members of DU, just based on circumstantial evidence.
But cheney may have gotten more specific information from her private interactions with other repugs. At the time of the attack, she was part of the house republican leadership, and other repugs had no reason to distrust her. She could have heard something specific about preparations or plans being made to try to disrupt the process of certifying Biden's victory.
Here is a quote from news media reports about an exchange cheney had with jim jordan during the attack:
Quote:
While these maniacs are going through the place, Im standing in the aisle and he said "We need to get the ladies away from the aisle. Let me help you." I smacked his hand away and told him, Get away from me. You f---ing did this.'"
Link: https://www.thewrap.com/liz-cheney-trump-jim-jordan/
Cheney has also made other statements that suggest to me that she thinks the attack was planned and organized in advance. For example,
Quote:
Cheney, who said that the committee's investigation is "not a game" and "deadly serious," said that the panel could subpoena McCarthy and Trump, but that the committee will go wherever we need to go to get the facts.
Link: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/live-blog/capitol-riot-january-6-committee-hearing-n1275078/ncrd1275129#liveBlogHeader
Of course all of this is speculation on my part. It's just that I've been very surprised by how angry cheney is, and how determined she is to pursue the investigation. Does she know something that we don't?

(58,785 posts)involved in during his career, I've often been struck by how little political assassination happens in the U.S., especially given the dreadful people and extremism that've taken over the GOP.
So far. I believe you must be right that they "would gladly," but best guess is they're still constrained by not yet having the power to make sure they couldn't be held accountable.
So maybe the danger Liz et al worry about is still in the form of the violent mobs and undirected lone-actor attacks their "colleagues" are stirring up. The old phrase for RW efforts to incite during Obama's first term, "trolling for assassins," comes to mind. Actually sending one would be a very big, new step, especially for their cowardly leader.
Until now, trolling for violence, pushing along death row executions, abandoning minority allies to genocide in foreign lands, and encouraging his loyalists to join super-spreader events seem to have been tRump's level.

(3,389 posts)about that as well, and I have come to the conclusion that a high percent of high profile cases always get solved, and they may fear they would also get caught, why they do not to go along with it. Although the Epstein case has been very quiet, but there is a book out there that may open the case up.
Although one of trump-the-buffoon's worst attributes is his lack of understanding of consequences, I am sure he has mentioned ideas like it, but people around him have stopped him. I also think that trump, even when president, has been in the radar of the FBI and CIA, I have a feeling there is a lot of recorded conversations of the buffoon hidden away in more than one intelligence agency, and he, or the people who protect him, most probably suspect that.

(2,266 posts)Between Liz and Dick, they have enough dirt vacuums to know all that ws going on in the dirty parts of the Rethhuglican party that no one wants to talk about.
Dick will supply her with the political ammunition to shoot these people in the face. When McCarthy called Trump, there would be a transcript -- guess who knows how to get hands on that outside of channels? Dick Cheney
So, when she questions McCarthy -- she will likely give him one chance -- "understanding that you are under oath before Congress, Leader McCarthy what exactly was said between yourself and Mr Trump on January 6 when you called from our secure location?
Kevin are you sure that was what was in the conversation? "
OK -- I'll read the transcript then. "Insert transcript"
Mr McCarthy you appear to have lied under oath before Congress. Do you know what the penalty for that is? Why would you risk that penalty unless you are part of a larger crime?"
She will then ask McCarthy if not wearing masks was a sign to the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, and other insurgents who was loyal to Trump and should not be injured or killed.
It will be a blood bath. At the end -- She will emerge as the new House Minority leader.

Most likely initiated by Putin but run through Trump and the RNC.
The lengths to which every single accusation has been covered up and made to look like old-fashioned partisan politics only strengthens my belief that this is the case. The Republican Party's future is dependent on covering this up. Liz Cheney wants her party back, and she's willing to expose the cancer in the hopes that the patient is still well enough to survive.
I'm obviously not a fan of Cheney nor the old-school Republican Party, but Trump + Putin in Washington = fascism and I would much rather having a legitimate counterpoint to the Democratic Party in power than the ever-present threat of a veritable takeover.

(1,988 posts)A number of Republican House members let the people in the day before for "recon", probably helped them get in on 01/06 and knew that, at minimum, they were going to try to disrupt the EC vote count. Its not very difficult to draw up criminal charges against these House members. Even if a referral is not made to DOJ, the plurality of Congress will likely demand that they are removed in lieu of that.
The GOP didn't want this for simple reasons: It keeps the spotlight on Traitor Trump and what he tried to pull. They had their chance to get rid of him for good, but were too afraid of losing voters/elections in 2022/2024 and wouldn't. Too many have tied themselves to his crazytown contingency of voters because they know they can't win re-election with support from traditional GOP voters alone. They want a GOP-friendly narrative at all times, something in the category of "bad black people" or "your country being stolen". Its kind of hard to portray themselves as the "good guys" or "saviors" when you support overthrowing our democracy for a life-long con man with no history of public service. Thus, the kicking and screaming...

Stealing the republic through fraud, deceit, lies, coercion, or force has little interest for her, I would suspect. It would make the reign politically illegitimate, and would eventually fail.
Are she and Pelosi talking? She and Biden? Because they know everything political outside the GOP, as well as much inside. These are all defenders of the republic. It's the most elite political club, even when on opposite sides in normal times.
