Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Wednesday told employees the company will require vaccinations for personnel working on campus, as the highly contagious Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus spreads across the world. The policy will begin in the US and expand to other regions over the next few months.
Pichai also delayed the company's mandatory return to office to October 18, pushing back the date from an earlier goal of September.
"Getting vaccinated is one of the most important ways to keep ourselves and our communities healthy in the months ahead," Pichai wrote in an email to employees. "I know that many of you continue to deal with very challenging circumstances related to the pandemic."
Pichai said the policy will be implemented according to local conditions, and he would share guidance and exceptions for people who can't get vaccinated due to medical or other protected reasons.

(4,112 posts)We are in mid-town Manhattan. NYC currently has a 1.79 positive rate, but it's climbing. We have 82% of the company fully vaccinated, but the remainder are not making any moves to get jabbed.
We've decided that we're going to use a 3.0 positive rate as our trigger to require weekly testing of anyone who isn't vaccinated. Plan is to make it difficult for them without having an actual "mandate" which seems to just make people dig in their heels even more. Double masks and daily symptom tracking protocols for them, too. Vaccinated people have relaxed restrictions but are encouraged to wear masks if they feel more comfortable.
Almost all of the holdouts are young women and have told me (HR VP, so tracking in is my dept) that they are concerned about "fertility" issues, gods help us. Doesn't matter how many times I send them CDC/NIH/Dept of Health refutations, they aren't budging.
