And she has a truly American story. Her father, an immigrant, got her into gymnastics and was paralyzed in an accident.

Outstanding. Think she had a little pressure? Now the MAGA’s may back off Simone a little.
I am so proud of this whole team of amazing young ladies. All their hearts were already golden.
Thank you ladies for showing what courage is. Certainly not any from you know who.

She is the first Hmong-American Olympic gymnast
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunisa_Lee

Lee was born Sunisa Phabsomphou[3] on March 9, 2003 to Yeev Thoj, a healthcare worker. Sunisa was born and raised in St. Paul and currently lives in St. Paul. [4] [5]. When she was 2 years old her mother met John Lee, who became Sunisa's father. Although her parents never legally married, she made the decision to change her last name to her father's.[6] Lee is of Hmong descent;[7][8] both of her parents immigrated from Laos when they were children.[6] She has five siblings, sisters Shyenne and Evionn and brothers Jonah, Lucky and Noah.[9][7] Evionn also competed in artistic gymnastics at the regional level.[10]

Most places have common law marriage that kicks in after a certain number of years. In my state, it's after seven years, and is the same as a "legal marriage." The ways this is written rather casts aspersions on her origins and is mean-spirited.
