Have we not learned anything over the last year since this pandemic started?
Come-on people - we weren't born yesterday.
They say they are taking all these precautions in Chicago to protect the crowd.
Yes there will be the majority of the attendees doing what they should to protect themselves and others - BUT - we know that there will also be a substantial percentage of those attendees that will cheat the system.
Fake proof of vaccination cards are available in the Chicago Area. You can bet there will be a number of attendees that will be using those.
Also - the planners have no control as to what people do once they make it into the venue. A portion of those that walked into the venue with masks - will take them off once they are inside. There is no way for them to police the use of masks.
Holding this event - knowing what we know as to what is going on around the country with the spread of this 'delta variant' is just irresponsible.
I like Mayor Lightfoot - but she made a mistake by not cancelling or postponing this event.
This is all about money and greed. The planners of this event will say anything and risk anything to make sure that they maximize their profit.
I'm really surprised that many of the entertainers scheduled to appear at this event haven't cancelled their appearances.
This is an accident waiting to happen. I'm just amazed that we haven't learned anything over this last year about how this pandemic works.
Watch in the weeks to come - the cases, hospitalizations and deaths go up in the Chicago Area. It is so predictable.
Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda!!!

(25,225 posts)Just like fake ID"s to get into a bar.
Again - it's going to be a portion of bad actors that are going to spoil it for others.
People are always looking for ways around the system.
Time will tell.
Let's see how Chicago does a couple of weeks after this event.

(25,225 posts)I've read where stacks of them have been stolen and are being sold out there.
All a person has to do is write in some numbers, dates and names on these blank cards and they have a pretty good representation of an authentic one.
One of the TV stations in town has flagged the fact that they are available - and a person using or selling can get fined or jailed.
Here's a google link for more info:

Now when you have 100,000 people converging on an event venue - how are they going to monitor the illegal use of these fake cards.

(1,306 posts)1. Lollapalooza is outdoors, is it not? That will help. A bit.
2. Bands will not cancel because they have been a year and a half without their biggest source of income, playing live. Believe it or not a band can show up, stay in their bus, or dressing rooms, and have minimal, or no, contact with anyone at the venue who is not part of their bubble already. The bands are actually, likely, the safest people there. And most will leave it to the public whether they want to risk their health to see the show.
Otherwise, you are correct.

(2,955 posts)People need to get vaccinated or suffer the consequences, this is almost a darwinism thing at this point. Open everything and stop protecting the vaccine holdouts.

Should society mask and social distance forever? Covid is literally never going away, it's gonna be one of the endemic cold viruses in the future.

(2,955 posts)How do we ever completely get rid of COVID? Even if we come out with a new Delta variant vaccine tomorrow we'll still have 1/3 of the country not taking it and they'll breed new variants.

(16,993 posts)as will lots of private businesses. There will be some hold outs but not enough to be a problem. The same way there are some who arent vaccinated against polio but we dont have outbreaks of it here.

(64,861 posts)She just said an hour ago that she thinks there'll be a spike following the festival.
I had forgotten about it, so never considered the risk until my wife mentioned it.
Now, I see your post too.

I'm well past outdoor concert festival age. I can't imagine being a young person living through this pandemic. I understand their desire to go out and have fun and hear music.
I will just continue to wear a mask for many more months.

(9,041 posts)Grant/Millennium Parks are pretty big. I've been to Lollapalooza several times back in the day. You don't have to smoosh in to enjoy the music. There's plenty of space on the periphery.
Now when Obama won in Grant Park in 2008. That was smooshing crowd only. Also great fun. Especially after. Downtown streets were packed in every direction. I stood on a statue and took pictures. I'll have to dig them out someday.

(6,477 posts)Outdoors, many masked, largely in the same age groups. The two main differences will be 1) that large numbers will also be vaccinated, and 2) that Delta is somewhat more easily transmitted.
