As the recall approaches, I am starting to see posts on DU that are echoing right wing talking points attacking Newsom about being elitist or slick, but in classic Hillary Clinton trolling fashion, will say that they are going to reluctantly vote against the recall. We should watch out for these new proliferation of trolls that are trying to decrease enthusiasm and support for Democrats by copying Fox News type attacks on Newsome or that try to blame an alleged gaff for the recall.
First, the recall is not motivated by anger about Newsome going to a restaurant. Instead, the recall is driven by the fact that it is relatively easy to initiate a recall in California, and because recall elections are special elections, you tend to get very low turnout, particularly since the regular primary is less than a year a way. Folks think, why bother, why not wait for the primaries? So, this is a calculated and well funded effort by Republicans to avoid and circumvent the Democratic process through a low turnout special election.
Second, the folks supporting the recall are pro-Trump, anti-vax right wingers who are highly motivated, but would not have a snowball's chance in held of ever winning in a general election California:
This is not because people do not like Newsome. He would never have won the nomination and the general election if he was not popular. Republicans have repeatedly targeted Democrats in California, to try force these well-financed, low turnout elections, and what is fueling the recount is Republican rage fueled by Fox News and Trump.
Third, don't fall for the Hillary Clintonesque attacks on Newsom, i.e., "I wish our candidate was not so (enter derogatory description). However, the alternatives are so much. So, I will grudgingly vote against the recall, but I wish we had a real progressive/Democrat/etc." We saw this in 2016. By 2020, I think folks were on the lookout for such tactics, but Republican trolls will still try to engage in these types of social media campaigns.
The fact of the matter is that Newsom has done about as a good job as you can expect responding to pandemic in the most populous, diverse state in the union. California has almost twice the population then Florida, yet Florida and Texas both have higher hospitalizations rates and cases then California.
