had a great sense of humor, he was around for as long as I could remember and was a face of the Democratic Party … literally, in my mind a Democrat looked like him …. I suppose I saw him on the news as the Party representative forever

President Joe Biden mourned Levin in a statement Friday, calling the late senator "one of the most honorable and decent people I have ever known."

"With his head tilted down, his eyes peering over his glasses -- Carl always looked people straight into their own eyes, listened with an open mind, and responded the way he saw it with respect," Biden said, adding that Levin "showed how democracy -- and our institutions -- can deliver and work for the people."

He also had an impish sense of humor and saw the irony in situations. When debating the Iraq War authorization, as serious as that was, he noted that Iraq and Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with the attack on 9/11, that Osama bin Laden was in Afghanistan and the attack was mostly carried out by Saudis.

And he wasn't above sarcasm: When a reporter, stonewalled by Levin and trying to get something out of him around the time of former President Bill Clinton's impeachment, asked what was the first thing he thought when he got up in the morning, he responded by saying it was that he needed to relieve himself.

But what struck Conrad the most — as is true with most who knew Levin — was the twinkle in his eye and how keen his mind was, how quickly he could seize on an argument, or a flaw in an argument, and turn it to his advantage.

"He had a mind like a razor," Conrad said. "If I were ever in a legal despite I would want carl to be my attorney.
