Many Commenwealth countries will become republics when the Queen dies. No one will stick around for Charles or the Crown after. They're all pretending to be one big happy family while Big Mama is around. After that? All bets are off.

Honestly, it does seem weird that countries as big as Australia, Jamaica, and Canada have the monarch of another country appoint their head of state.

Since none of those countries have a formal aristocracy, they're already republics, functionally speaking.

Meanwhile here in Jamaica the Prime Minister was delighted to become a member of the Privy Council - insecurity is a major weakness. Next week he'll deliver a speech about Independence

Former realms

Republican referendums

Current realms

There are currently 16 Commonwealth realms, with a combined area (excluding the Antarctic claims) of 18.7 million km2 (7.2 million mi2) and a population of around 151 million, of which all but about two million live in the six most populous: the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, and Jamaica.
