As the Herald report notes, the new flood of victims flooding in are even sicker than before -- and also younger.
Pointing out that every bed in Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital is filled at the moment, the report notes that every patient was unvaccinated and now suffering the devastating effect of COVID-19.
"The youngest patient, a 27-year-old woman on a ventilator, had to be resuscitated with a bag valve mask after her blood oxygen saturation levels crashed. The oldest, a 71-year-old man, has been in the ICU for two weeks. He has been in a coma for three days. When he awakens, if he awakens, he will be a widower. The man's wife, also hospitalized with COVID-19, died two days earlier," the report states. "Many healthcare workers at Jackson Memorial thought the end of the pandemic was in sight, largely due to the effectiveness of the vaccines. Then the delta variant took hold, particularly in areas with low vaccination rates, and cases are surging again, only at a faster clip."
According to Alix Zacharski, manager of the medical intensive care unit at Jackson Memorial, the critically-ill patients they are seeing are way younger -- and way sicker -- than they were during the first wave of COVID victims. "Unlike last year, we're getting a very young population, which is extremely concerning because this time we're now getting young people without pre-existing conditions," Zacharski admitted. "So that's scarier."

(6,137 posts)maybe that would motivate idiots. Only adults who refuse to be vaccinated are no longer simply idiots, they are accessory to manslaughter. Adults who refuse to vaccinate their kids 12 and older are committing intentional child endangerment.

(11,949 posts)Way better than any other southern state except Virginia. And culturally they are becoming less and less Southern. Actually better than Michigan.
Half of Florida is not really Southern, especially Miami.
But there are a lot of us.
And most problematic, our state leaders, with the exception of the Democratic Secretary of Agriculture are acting like the pandemic is over.
Personally I think is going to bite them in the ass. I know over 5 trump voters who have it and one spent a week in ICU. As the article stated, none of them vaccinated. Looks like they will all live. But when the one who spent time in the ICU gets his bill his world is going to get rocked. And One of the others seems to have long haul symptoms even 2 weeks after getting it. She test negative but is still having problems.
In the households Im talking about only one person did not catch Covid. Guess who is the only one vaccinated? Bingo. He is pissed his household refused the vaccine.

The vaccines protect against death by Delta as well as Alpha. But Delta is way more transmissible so more people, vaccinated or not are becoming exposed. The difference is unvaccinated are dying wholesale. Or at least going to the hospital.

(14,971 posts)good thing that Florida doesn't have the vaccination rates of Alabama or Mississippi. NC has a Dem Governor who's worked hard trying to get people vaccinated including offering a million dollar lottery. Florida's vax rates would probably be better than ours without DeSantis at the helm.

(11,949 posts)And unlike a month ago where I shop most people are masked.
I think some of the resistant to the vaccine have stated realizing we are laughing at them. Well, not laughing but you see my point.
They are now the butt of dark humor jokes. Plus everyone now knows someone in the hospital. Last year it was mainly old folks. Now it middle age people.

(2,963 posts)Sadly we are moving left coast to right coast in early October and will have to travel by car through the unvaxxed zones somewhere. No reason this country should be in this position at this point.

(11,425 posts)For Florida, the keys. They are both mid 40's teachers vaccinated took 12 yr old son.
I noticed he changed after covid started and both him and wife had to teach at home and help their 3 kids, the older daughter left for college and soon to be senior stayed home to work.
They had a long time of hybrid classes of kids both home and at school then was forced to do summer school because kids were behind.
He did it but he is rougher now, not as friendly and there is a edge to him.
Makes you wonder how many teachers are going to be like that this fall. When he didn't cancel trip to Florida I could tell his attitude was fuck it.

(2,963 posts)I'd just be real nervous of anyone not masked and anything resembling crowds. Teachers have had it rough as it wasn't a methodology they were ready for (remote learning) and there was huge pressure to get the kids to still succeed which just was not going to happen for many. My neice and her husband both teach high school in an inner city and they said without the proper tools and preparation it was a just a joke despite their best efforts. And the kids were on zoom classes on one monitor and playing games on the second monitor. And the administration was just hammering them to get good results. I suggested the kids should just get a Do Over and restart this fall where they were in fall of 2019 or early 2020 but no one wants to hear that as it means more $$$. Plus the colleges are terrified they would lose a whole year + waiting for a graduating class.

(58,785 posts)younger people thought they needn't fear it for themselves and their friends, because that was mostly true.
Some parents we know will get their youngest child, not yet 12, vaccinated this week by claiming he's 13. The fear has begun. His older siblings are already vaccinated.
