While the Delta variant rages, and employers tangle with whether or not to impose vaccine requirements and/or mask mandates, South Dakota's Governor Kristi Noem decides to let everyone flail away. According to AP, "she has no plans to ratchet up her messaging to urge people to get a COVID-19 vaccine, even as Republican leaders across the country try to persuade vaccine skeptics to roll up their sleeves and take the shots." So, no pushing the vaccine, and hey, why not mock the mask mandates on Twitter, too?
Then there was Noem's wildly tone-deaf tweet yesterday that workers just pack up and get another job if their employer says they have to be vaccinated. Here's a conservative's take on that nonsense:

Now, one can scoff at "MAGA pragmatism," but the rest of that is essentially right. Most people, especially at the lower-income level, are living paycheck-to-paycheck. Just up and quitting, and going to look for another job isn't in the cards for most people. Noem has no idea how regular people live, though, so she'll happily tweet whatever foolishness pops into her head, as long as it fits her narrative.
However, this time she got caught, as evidenced by this MAGA blogger calling her out on it. The rest of the blog has some twaddle about Trump understanding the plight of the working man, how he connects with blue-collar workers, and so on. Maybe. But he does so by exploiting their fears and insecurities, pandering to nativism and xenophobia, overt racism, and all the rest of societal ills. Trump became a billionaire exploiting that class, not understanding it.Link to tweet

The Conservative Treehouse
Its always there, right below the conservative veneer; and if you wait, it surfaces. This tweet highlights the difference between conservative corporatism (traditional GOP class), and MAGA pragmatism (the blue collar dynamic).
The disconnect is found in the difference between what looks like a good talking point, and the reality of workers having to deal with the issue of mandated vaccinations in the workplace. Just quit your job not so easy in practice.
The SD Governor seems to overlook that entire sectors of the economy are impacted by federal rules, not just individual companies. Hotel workers, restaurants, cooks and cleaners, mechanics, service industry writ large, are subject to forced business owner compliance with regulatory agencies. When the federal government initiates a mandate, all businesses within that sector are hit with the mandate. Switching jobs offers no security or escape from the mandate.

The free-market economy is a great soundbite, but it doesnt exist. There are now corporately controlled segments of the economy that work hand-in-glove with Washington DC through money and lobbyists. This is why buying paint (or anything) from Walmart was ok during the pandemic and essential -vs- nonessential lockdown, but buying paint from the local mom and pop hardware store was not allowed.

(11,949 posts)Within 60 days. And are in negotiations with the unions to see if they can add that to the contact. Im sure the Unions will agree with some additional financial benefits to the members. Who already start at over $15 an hour.
I look forward to the Kool-aid drinking trumpers and Q believers not being in my work place.
The wife manages managers at a company that has also mandated vaccines. One of her managers called her today who told her that if forced to vaccinated a few employees would quit. Her response? Dont discourage them.

(11,868 posts)They need to be held to the same standards as non union employees. If they decide to go on strike over it, so be it. Let them argue in front of the NLRB that they are striking because they refused a vaccine.

(11,949 posts)They give nothing to the company for free.
Im a manager so obviously not a union member anymore. You cant be a member if in management.
Ive watched all companies over the past 35 year pay executives and stock holders a growing percentage of the companies massive profits.
The hourly employees are finally starting to see a big increases in pay.
And why would a Union charge for doing something common sense dictates? First, many of their members might not agree. Many union members vote Republican. Thats a big deal. But the main thing is unions have learned not to give anything to the company for free. For the first time in my 35 year career labor has an advantage. They will not squander it.
They are already required to wear masks. The contact does not prevent that.
I dont talk to or know my employees status for vaccinations or politics. But I would guess 25% are unvaccinated and hard core republicans. Maybe more. They are mainly white blue collar dudes. Thats not our party anymore. But 40% are immigrants and I would assume most who can vote are Democratic.

And Trump, too? WaPo, 29 April 2020:
President Trump signed an executive order Tuesday evening compelling meat processors to remain open to head off shortages in the nations food supply chains, despite mounting reports of plant worker deaths due to covid-19.
So whats this crap about workers having a say

(6,679 posts)You have the right to quit or get fired if your employer is abusive and you refuse to be abused.
No I don't think a shot is abuse. Clearly she does though, and that is what she is saying instead of doing her job. An actual Governor would stop abuse.
