Lydia and Lawrence Rodriguez, of La Marque, were admitted to a hospital three weeks ago, ill with COVID-19, KTRK TV reported. Despite constant medical care, the virus has continued ravaging their bodies.
My 42 yo cousin didnt believe in the vaccine. Now she and her husband are in the ICU on vents fighting for their lives with this delta variant while their 4 children are at home, Rodriguez cousin Dottie Jones said. Weve been told they are very, very, very, very sick is what the doctor told us, Jones said. And if they do survive, its going to be a long, long road.
One of the last things Lydia said before being intubated was to make sure her kids get vaccinated
Jones is asking for prayers, words of encouragement, any and all help that friends can spare for her cousin and family. Shes taken in their kids for the time being, Jones said, and on top of the emotional toll, the household and medical bills are becoming overwhelming.
But this all could have been avoided, Jones said.

The misinformation on Facebook is literally killing people. Congress needs to take a sledgehammer to it. The boy genius will still be rich.

(32,617 posts)I got my vaccinations (both shots) in March but I spent a solid month on-line, trying to get set-up with an appointment. I'm lucky to have a home computer and internet access, so it wasn't too difficult for me.
But a lot families don't have those things, including minorities, so how are they going to get the help they need? How are they going to understand the importance of getting vaccinated?
We need to reach out to our neighbors and other people in our communities, and try to help those who don't have the ability to make their own appointment for the shots.

(41,116 posts)and people who don't have computer access for days and weeks on end are shut out. That system was whacko for many people.
I live in a high tech use area. After spending weeks online looking for a location and time that would work, I had to miss the first appt.
In frustration I just went to the local CVS, asked and the nice pharmacist said ok. I got both doses there. Walk in, no appt.
If there's another public matter like this, I'll go to a store rather than spend hours online futzing over a hot computer!

(30,730 posts)I signed up with our county health department. We were about number 900 in line. I went everywhere on my computer. My son helped us. We drove fifty miles for our shots. He drove from suburban Chicago to central Illinois.
A week later, our health department called us to make appointments. We were glad to tell them that the next people in line could have our spots.
Now, people can just walk in for shots. I have little sympathy for those who don't.

I flat do not understand these people.

(41,116 posts)there's no excuse for delay anymore after the early months of confusing appointment scheduling. And it's troubling to watch the country sink this low in ignorance, defiance and hate. Stay well.

(26,579 posts)That doesn't suggest that access was an issue for them. This is an issue of personal responsibility IMO.
I'm not saying that there aren't people who have difficulty with access, but that doesn't sound like the situation here.
I'm also uncomfortable with people making automatic assumptions about anyone with a Hispanic sounding name. Plenty of those people supported and voted for TFG, and willingly drank the Kool-aid.

(30,807 posts)The parents are pretty young (40s). With all the messaging about the elderly and those with comorbidities being the most at risk, they probably thought this couldn't happen to them.

(1,910 posts)We have some in our junior tennis community who are refusing to vaccinate their 12 and overs. I try to convince them but it is what it is. The only good thing is these young people are super fit and exercise 4-5 hours per day.
Looking at this couple's facebook, the entire family has the added risk factor of being overweight. Statistics are what they are, unfit people are having way worse outcomes from Covid.
Perhaps not politically correct but is absolutely is a risk factor that must be entered into a parent's decision.

(26,579 posts)No prayers from me for people who are sick/dying by their own deliberate choices.
I do hope that these sorts of situations will encourage others to get vaccinated, and take basic safety precautions. That's the ones who don't dismiss them as "crisis actors".
Hope the kids learn something from this.
