$5,800 Whiskey Bottle, a Gift From Japan to Pompeo, Is Missing, U.S. Says
The State Department is investigating what happened to it.

The State Department is investigating the whereabouts of a $5,800 bottle of whiskey the Japanese government gave to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in 2019, according to two people briefed on the inquiry and a document made public on Wednesday.

It was unclear whether Mr. Pompeo ever received the gift, as he was traveling in Saudi Arabia on June 24, 2019, the day that Japanese officials gave it to the State Department, according to a department filing on Wednesday in the Federal Register documenting gifts that senior American officials received in 2019. Such officials are often insulated by staff members who receive gifts and messages for them.

American officials can keep gifts that are less than $390. But if the officials want to keep gifts that are over that price, they must purchase them. According to the filing, the State Department said the bottle was appraised at $5,800.
-------------------

Mr. Pompeo, through his lawyer William A. Burck, said he had no recollection of receiving the bottle of whiskey, and did not have any knowledge of what happened to it or that there was a department inquiry into its whereabouts.

“He has no idea what the disposition was of this bottle of whiskey,” Mr. Burck said.

It was whisky.
They could easily have had a cocktail hour & a bunch of people drank it.
I think they'd have a hard pushing an ethics violation if one consumed a CONSUMABLE gift.
This is a molehill.

WASHINGTON — As federal workers file out of the State Department at the end of a Washington workday, an elite group is often just arriving in the marbled, flag-lined lobby: Billionaire CEOs, Supreme Court justices, political heavyweights and ambassadors arrive in evening attire as they're escorted by private elevator to dinner with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Until the coronavirus shut them down in March, the gatherings were known as "Madison Dinners" — elaborate, unpublicized affairs that Pompeo and his wife, Susan Pompeo, began in 2018 and held regularly in the historic Diplomatic Reception Rooms on the government's dime.

State Department officials involved in the dinners said they had raised concerns internally that the events were essentially using federal resources to cultivate a donor and supporter base for Pompeo's political ambitions — complete with extensive contact information that gets sent back to Susan Pompeo's personal email address. The officials and others who attended discussed the dinners on condition of anonymity.

Either way, this is small potatoes.
After all, it was a consumable. I wasn't 6 grand in gold Japanese coins, or something.

And no matter who received such a gift (Democrat or Republican), what is to be done with a consumable gift? Let it sit on a shelf until it's thrown away? Let it collect enough dust no one notices when one of the stock clerks cleans the shelves and it disappears? Who gets to decide who enjoys such a gift?
