https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/analysis-opinion/time-running-out-stop-gerrymanderingAm I being a debbie downer for feeling like the US is already past the point of no return? Gerrymandering alone is enough to give Republicans the House majority.

(32,757 posts)A little bit of good news- NY, CA, IL each lost one seat, the maps will be drawn to favor the Dems there, so 3 gqp will be losing their seats. Also, Bohbert will more than like go down, and possibly cawthorn...he had a very narrow win.
Plus some think the gqp had all the wins they are going to get last year. They have no place to go. Whereas the DNC has 22 vulnerable gqp they intend to target. And, the are cash flush

(3,213 posts)Would love for him and Boebert to go packing. I'm still hoping they face prosecution for aiding the terrorists on 1/6.

(8,090 posts)(or so I've heard) but perhaps someone in Colorado can weigh in.

(8,090 posts)I believe four Republicans have announced they're running against him in '22 so we may get rid of him that way, but I'm not certain a Dem can win that district.

(52,157 posts)in comparison Butterfield, my Congressman won by 9. we did better in the 9th and 10th. NC will gain a seat, and we are currently split 8 to 5 in favor of the GOP. The GOP has publicly stated that they will gerrymander 10 to 4, and they have complete power since the governor has no role in redistricting. Our Democratic supreme court may make them redraw but they will get one election with those seats at a minimum. The last time it took us 4 elections to get a fair redraw.

(10,429 posts)It's mainly Manchin who is causing the delay. S1 should have been passed as soon as the House sent it over. If it were law right now, most or all of what republicons are doing would be stopped. Dark money would not be an issue.
Instead, unbelievably, we have a Democratic senator who is doing Moscow Mitch's dirty work. And the clock is quickly running out
Marius25
(3,213 posts)the Filibuster to allow that to pass.
Don't see how we can pass that law.

(30,613 posts)That's about the only thing I can figure.

(10,429 posts)It's not being done, and not enough elected Democrats seem to realize that republicons are at their last step before getting complete permanent control of the entire federal government.

(63,221 posts)I wish I was more optimistic, but I am really losing hope.
We're trying to put out a 4-Alarm fire with a water pistol and it's not enough.

(423 posts)- that they would institute REDMAP after the poor showing in 2010 and that gerrymandering on steroids would result in permanent control of the Senate, House, and Presidency. This will be the second Universal Gerrymande opportunity and still no legislation either banning the practise OR introducing a more democratic Proportional Representational System which is far more difficult to Gerrymander.
This is another reason to change the legislation and kill the DemoBbuster

(3,858 posts)We have gerrymandered the MAGATS completely out of power here in CA. Hopefully 2022 is as good as 2018 when we were able to take 7 Congressional seats from them by stacking them into a few districts. I think the number was only 5 in 2020.

(33,313 posts)There's a difference.
WA has a bipartisan commission that re-districts based on the Census results, which, given that they're a shrinking minority in WA, is actually leading to giving the GOP an advantage they don't deserve.
GOP-controlled states that have GERRYMANDERED (WI, MI, OH) aren't about to do anything but make the situation worse, and there's jack shit Liberals can do about it except take it to court. They make the rules.

(3,858 posts)We took 87% of the seats with only 65% of the votes. That's 7 more seats than we should have got proportionally.

(33,313 posts)to benefit on party over another.
If CA uses a bipartisan commission, then the results shouldn't be unfair.
Zeitghost
(3,858 posts)But when you can force the MAGATS that make up 1/3 of this state into 7 districts when they should have 14, it's a pretty big advantage.
Marius25
(3,213 posts)Was that before the redistricting?
They managed to pick up 2 IIRC. Giving us +5 over theoretically neutral district lines. Still a win.

(3,858 posts)Call it what you want. When we leave the MAGATS with only 7/53 seats despite them having 1/3 of the vote it's a good thing.
Of course the downside is McCarthy and Nunes have super secure seats, but it's a trade I'll take any day.
