* ON EDIT: My 2 cents, it's an immigrant thing. I know lots of them both "Legal" and Desperate.

The Legal ones go through a - not "grueling" but - stringent indoctrination process, weeks/months of memorization of American history/values/ with a test that probably NO native wingnuts can pass. Big, impressive, *moving* swearing-in ceremony. So, they are proud as they should be, and also mini-wingnuts.

It's like when Maria SHRIVER married the Schwartz - and our convention-type Dems would rag on her and confront her about marrying a wingnut, and she would answer, paraphrasing, "He's not like that, he's an IMMIGRANT!" - (I still detest Ahhhnuld)
