POLITICO Playbook PM: GOP latches on to Cori Bush's private security spending

Politico

HOT ON THE RIGHT: CORI BUSH DEFENDS HER OWN SECURITY FUNDING WHILE BACKING ‘DEFUND THE POLICE’ — Republicans are salivating over a new interview in which Rep. CORI BUSH (D-Mo.) defended spending $70k on private security for herself as a member of Congress — while also saying Democrats should defund the police.

“I’m going to make sure I have security,” Bush said in a CBSN interview blowing up on Twitter. “I get to be here to do the work, so suck it up — and defunding the police has to happen. We need to defund the police.”

Our sources tell us that the NRCC has already started weaving Bush’s interview into their attack ads on frontline House Democrats. As part of the effort, they released a new video juxtaposing the rise in crime nationwide with Bush’s comments, which they’ll be blasting out this afternoon. “Vote them out. November 8, 2022,” the video reads at the end.

Some folks here seem to think that "DTP" was only a phrase by some political activists. As long as elected officials (in safe seats) are going to echo this mantra, we're at risk of being tarred with the same in competitive seats.

Not another gdamned word about millionares & billionares (Bezos) while chiming in for all the little people left behind.

Ms Bush, do you know how uber priviledged this sounds?
Yes. It Does!
$70g's to protect me but none for thee. That was YOUR Vote!

and explain to her how her spending thousands on personal security while calling for no spending on police is just a horrible sound bite that republicans will use over and over for talking points and negative ads.

She's doing a good thing on the rent moratorium, but please stop the defund the police wording.

She's paying for PRIVATE security. This has to do with state/local/federal government police forces how??? Or, are they upset that she doesn't trust these government police to protect her? Or, is it because she's black and female? (I'm going with the latter.)

...especially when violent crime is going up. And they can't afford private security as an alternative.

Flip it around: if defunding DOESN'T increase crime, why does Congresswoman Bush need extra security?

…for her security detail?

Agree that Bush is being colossally stupid with the defund the police comments. It is a HUGE club to give Republicans when poll show safety and security are the top concerns of voters.

It's not complicated. Just reword it to any number of wordings that do not need to be explained.

Reallocate police funds
Fire killer cops
Train cops to de-escalate

Whatever, just stop using words a street activist yelled out as cops engaged protestors at a highly-charged BLM rally. It turns off too many voters and gives republicans political ammo to damage us...and Bush, as she's finding out.

Kudos to her though on her renter moratorium work.

..the job while she staged her pre-orchestrated grandstanding for the cameras.
Bush was protected in that hot moment by the very Capitol Police she just voted to defund.

As she munched on oreos & cheetos, the Capitol Police had her back.
Gee Thanks guys!

She went from homeless to spending $70 grand for private security, while voting to defund the police for the vulnerable homeless in violent & petty crime camps.

She ain"t on their side as she claims.
Money & Media, baby!!

And she asks WHY the GOP is giving her crap right now.

I call bullshit.

renter moratorium sleep-in/protest. Her spending thousands on security while insisting on defunding the police...well, those two things cancel each other out. She might need to think things out more.

And I didn't know she had upstaged Rep. Waters on the issue.

Credit to Lapucelle OP:

THANK YOU MAXINE WATERS for your hard work that secured the extension of the rent moratorium.
edited to reflect that there were 100 original Democratic co-sponsors, not 102. Representative Bill Foster and Representative Cori Bush signed on a day later.

August 2, 2021
Los Angeles – Today, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Financial Services, sent a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
In the letter, Congresswoman Waters expresses her strong support for Speaker Pelosi and reiterates her call for President Biden to direct the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to extend the eviction moratorium.

Snip

On July 29, 2021, Congresswoman Maxine Waters introduced H.R. 4791, the Protecting Renters from Evictions Act of 2021, which would extend the eviction moratorium until December 31, 2021.

Here's Rep. Waters' bill which has 100 Democratic original co-sponsors (102 total).

Ms Bush was well aware of the progress & process of Water's bill when she staged her Capitol Step performance.

She chose to make it all about herself.
