About 20 years ago I took a tour to Crete, and it was incredible. Due to some problems I ended up traveling 24 hours from Santa Barbara Airport to Athens. I looked out the taxi windows and saw dry hills, jacarandas, olive trees, other vegetation imported to and thriving on the Central Coast’s “Mediterranean climate” — due to my exhaustion and disorientation, it was surreal at first.

I am so sorry the Greeks are experiencing this. I just assume they, too, are living with drought. Calling fires of this magnitude “brushfires” minimizes the impact.

I spent some time there in college, and it's a beautiful country. The people are lovely, the food is amazing, and of course the cultural sites take your breath away. It's so sad to see this happening. Horrific.
