The Republican senator and former presidential hopeful bought the La Jolla property in 2008 and built a luxurious mansionU.S. Sen. Mitt Romney has sold his oceanfront villa in La Jolla, California, in an eight-figure deal that was first announced virtually.
The Utah Republican and former Massachusetts governor scooped up $23.5 million in an apparent off-market deal for the property, according to documents recorded with San Diego County on June 30.
Last month, during a virtual discussion on infrastructure, the senator noted that he had sold the California home and that the movers have cleared everything out except for this bed, according to The Salt Lake Tribune, which first reported the sale.
Given the discreet nature of the transaction, little information is publicly available about the beachfront spread or its amenities. Though aerial images show the walled, Mediterranean-style property encompasses a pool and hot tub in an inner courtyard and a separate beachside yard.

Had not seen this reported here. I believe this is the home that had the car elevator.

(54,330 posts)I dont know who bought the house, but whoever it was, if they bought it with money on which all taxes were fully paid, then go ahead. If they can handle the California property tax on a spread like that, its no skin off my back, and Im sure California will welcome the income.

(9,067 posts)The Internet has been around a little bit. People talk and meet and conduct business over it daily.
They used it twice in just those opening sentences.
Just something odd that stuck out at me, because I haven't heard things described that way in quite a while. I don't have "virtual" meetings every day with work. They're just meetings.

(32,620 posts)It's off the market now, of course. But Zillow shows some interior photos that the other article doesn't have. Not much privacy, neighbors are all right on top of each other. Yeesh! For $24 mill you'd expect to at least have a little bit of a yard and fencing.
Edit to add: It's obvious why he needed the car elevator. There's no place to park cars and he doesn't have a driveway. So the elevator allows him to park cars into the basement which was greatly enlarged for the purpose.

(64,988 posts)I know it's a small piece of land, but that is only around $200 per square foot.
Even in our small town, it's around $160/sq.ft. And, we're not on an oceanfront.
I guess I expected the finishing & accoutrements to push that price up to twice normal, or $300-350/sq.ft.
Good thing I'm not in real estate.
