Fox News host Bret Baier confronted Senator Rick Scott, a Florida Republican, after he objected to supporting legislation raising the national debt furtherpointing out that GOP lawmakers had largely disregarded this position under former President Donald Trump.
During Trump's four years in the White House, the U.S. debt increased by about 33 percent. Under the Trump administration, the debt surged by about $6.7 trillion to $26.9 trillion at the end of 2020. Although much of this was due to the extraordinary circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, the signature Trump tax cuts of 2017which largely benefited the wealthiest Americans and corporationsalso contributed substantially to deficit spending, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).
In an interview with Fox News Sunday, Scott argued that he was opposed to the approximately $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure legislation nearing passage in the Senate because the CBO estimated that it will add more than $250 billion to the national debt.
But Fox News host Bret Baier responded by pointing out the massive growth in the national debt under Trump, when Republicans also controlled the Senate for all four years and the House of Representatives for the first two years of the former president's term.
