Fox Anchor Scolds GOP Senator for Supporting Infrastructure Deal: 'Are You Betraying the Republican

Base?’

Trump-boosting Fox News anchor Maria Bartiromo chastised Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) on Sunday over his support of the broadly popular bipartisan infrastructure bill that is on the verge of passage, asking him point-blank if he’s “betraying the Republican base” while complaining that the spending package doesn’t include money for a border wall.

With the long slog to passing the trillion-dollar bill finally nearing the finish line—and GOP negotiators saying that up to 18 Republican senators have indicated they support the package—Cramer appeared on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures to explain why he was going to vote for one of President Joe Biden’s top priorities.

-snip-

After quoting conservative columnist Kimberly Strassel’s criticism that the bill is nothing more than “step one of President Biden’s Green New Deal,” the Fox host turned to Cramer and asked: “Senator, why are you in favor of this bill, are you betraying the Republican base?”

Laughing off her pointed question, Cramer defended his support of the bill by noting that the package directs a lot of spending towards “hard” infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and railroads. On top of that, the North Dakota lawmaker pointed out that this was the result of a compromise between Democrats and Republicans.

Because Republicans don't drive on roads. They all have their own personal aircraft like their hero.

If you pay later, you pay more.

This has been kicked down the road for decades. Yes there is funding for projects but any home owner knows that eventually you’ve got to get a new roof and the water pipes are going to need attention. No one wanted to do this. Republicans were debt weary (except when they weren’t) and of a Democratic President proposed it awwww LAWD the sky was falling.

They know it’s time and that their states need it. They waited and waited and waited and now Biden gets another huge domestic win in his first year. The growth it will spur will be felt for the rest of the first term - note: I don’t think he’s running again.

the smaller, physical infrastructure bill that many Republican voters want passed and will mean influx of money, jobs, infrastructure development to many areas of the country. With another critical election coming up, there is more benefit to Republican officeholders in making it finally happen than continued refual.

They're only supporting the physical infrastructure bill, of course.

They'll maintain their holy opposition to the other, larger, evil Democratic bill that invests in human infrastructure and will be passed by Democrats alone, "a release valve for the partisan steam that animates the party’s base."

Giving Republican leaders this opportunity to split the baby and have their cake too, if they chose, was part of the Democratic leaders' decision to pursue a two-bill approach.

He was right to laugh it off. This is bread & butter legislating, precisely what Biden knew he could make a deal on. The "betrayers" are GQP assholes, but they can still see reality from their bunkers.
