Over the eviction moratorium, focusing on a weeping 72 old woman that was evicted. They're calling that last minute action to restore the moratorium a 'failed Hail Mary' regurgitated from a Trump era policy that full of holes such as the one the lady's landlord used to evict her.

(51,565 posts)90% of her disability/SS income on rent and astronomical electric prices in KC. I thought she said she is 62 years old. Her rent must be extremely high, especially for KC. I'm not familiar with the area so maybe the rents are like those I experience in Southern CA.

(8,957 posts)If it comes from SS/disability she would have been in the same fix with or without the pandemic.
I didnt see the episode. Maybe Im missing something.
But these programs were put in place to help people who lost their incomes due to Covid.
This sounds like a different situation.

(3,266 posts)If you're a small-time landlord with a few properties, how are you going to make your mortgage payments?
Better to just give the renters who need it enough money to pay the landlords, or pay the rent for them.
Maybe I'm missing how these renters are going to pay this deferred rent (many thousands of dollars), and how landlords are going to get enough to pay the nut and also do maintenance.
I know someone who rented a house to someone temporarily in Dec 2019 (the tenants had sold their house and were looking to buy another). My acquaintance just meant to help this family out for a bit and then put the house on the market. 1.5 years later, they're still in the house, not paying rent. He's still paying a mortgage and can't sell the house, because no one will buy a house with non-paying tenants.
It isn't really good longterm for either party-- unless I'm missing how this is going to settle in the future.
Mr.Bill

(18,187 posts)The AP story you cited is from July 13.
July 26, 2021
Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office on Monday [July 26] announced a streamlined application for federal COVID-19 rent relief and pledged that any eligible New Yorker needing assistance will receive it by Aug. 31.
The new application process, which is planned to go into effect Tuesday [July 27], will relax documentation standards for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program for both tenants and landlords, and will allow the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance to clear the backlog of applications, which totaled 160,000 in mid-July, according to the agency.

New Yorks stalled rent relief program has started sending checks to a handful of landlords whose tenants have missed rent payments as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, with Gov. Andrew Cuomo pledging to pay every approved applicant by the end of August.

While the government's new eviction moratorium has given renters some breathing room, it's still important to apply for a program as soon as possible.
"If you haven't applied yet, you should immediately because it may take time to get that money to you," Yentel said.
Even if the money takes months to arrive, submitting a rent aid application aid is a critical first step for renters who might be facing eviction. That's because in many states, including California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New York and Oregon, you are protected from being evicted while your application is being processed.

(18,187 posts)to extend the rent moratorium went over his head.
The strategy was masterful because in the end the Waters/Pelosi/Biden solution secured the extension, and, at the same time protected every Democratic member, forestalled criticism of the CDC taking action and laid the whole thing at the feet of Brett Kavanaugh. It appears to have been an effort coordinated between Pelosi, Waters, and Biden.
Outcome: Maxine got the rent moratorium extended, Nancy protected all of her members, and Joe got to make this about Brett Kavanaugh screwing up, rather than the CDC overreaching.
Speaker Pelosi's tactical release of a series of statements, press releases, and "Dear Colleague" missives while she, Representative Waters and President Biden were working together behind the scenes tells the story of how this got done.

Maxine Waters' using Brett Kavanaugh's concurrence to seal the deal was brilliant.

(18,187 posts)Representative Waters, Speaker Pelosi, and President Biden secured the rent moratorium extension, protected House members in swing districts, avoided involving the Senate, and forestalled Republican accusations of executive branch and CDC overreach, all because Brett Kavanaugh's concurring opinion in the SC decision opened the door.
And where was Leader Schumer while this was all being planned out? On the steps of the Capitol with Cori Bush, getting his picture taken and helping to keep the press distracted and busy.
It was a thing of beauty to behold.
And I think there is a unicorn. Cori Bush seems to have gotten the lion's share of glory that might rightfully belong to the seasoned Democrats who knew how to get the job done and then actually got the job done.
I guess for Maxine, Nancy, and Joe getting it done is more important than getting the credit.

(1,261 posts)That appears to be the mood of his show, even with a guest host. Though it can be informative, an interesting looks at different perspective that I admit, I agree at times. Though the Progressive faction of the party does seem really harsh on Biden, IMO.

(53,737 posts)progressive reps unawares too. There was a post that explained Maxine Waters was up on it and Cori Bush caught wind of her efforts and then did her bit sleeping at the Capitol...sorta grabbing headlines.
And millions of rent money was provided in the Relief Bill. All states have to do is tap it and stop blaming Biden. The commentators and Congresspersons should work on tapping that available, already allocated money and stop grandstanding and complaining about the administration.

Maybe she was evicted last year and it was stopped, then restarted? I guess, then, someone could be evicted that quickly? Also, a 72-year-old should have some protections, being a senor citizen!

(5,164 posts)My father in hospital. I felt terrible for this woman. She is 62, she has been fighting the eviction for several months with no help in sight. Her landlord recently locked her out illegally and she is living with a friend for a limited time. She said the pandemic has affected her situation but apparently she is not eligible for aid. I could not determine what the circumstances were from what I heard. You can google and watch the episode if you want to.
