Mindy Greene from Provo, UT read articles on Facebook and prayed whether she should have her family vaccinated. God said no. Her husband is now fighting for his life in the ICU for over a month. She says she now realizes the studies she read were bogus and the experts, frauds.

(45,476 posts)made fun of Elijah's bald spot.
23 Then he went up from there to Bethel; and as he was going up by the way, young lads came out from the city and mocked him and said to him, Go up, you baldhead; go up, you baldhead! 24 When he looked behind him and saw them, he cursed them in the name of the LORD. Then two female bears came out of the woods and tore up forty-two lads of their number. 25 And he went from there to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.
Good times. Guess God is having a big laugh right now about Mindy Greene and family!

(3,994 posts)A lot of people do that, for example, prayer.
The problem is when people think God talks to them.

(3,386 posts)are you really talking to someone?
This is a psychological thing about praying and thinking that someone is listening. No matter who it is, when you talk to someone you usually get feedback. Sure, they may think they are talking to someone, but can someone prove there is someone out there listening? It is all a fantasy based on blind faith.

(3,994 posts)It's like a message in a bottle. They'll say, "I'm putting it out there to the universe. Let's see what happens."
So, for some, it is a one-way thing.
I'm a devout atheist. But, I've been wrong on so many things.
Who am I to suggest that prayers are empty? Maybe in someone else's universe, it does good.
Maybe praying makes people feel good. Maybe that's good enough.
I know so little -- but I am sure there's no place for a deity in my life.

(1,955 posts)I've come to realize, they are praying to no one. But I think its a powerful thing to put your prayer or ask out there. I think it eases the mind that the prayer or question is at least asked. I myself ask for help from nature, a quiet lake or stand of trees. To me these are right in front of me. I know I'm asking no one for help, but my mind somehow thinks it is.

(3,994 posts)>> it eases the mind that the prayer or question is at least asked.
It helps to align one's thoughts.
There are other forms of prayer.
Religious Jews, for example, open a prayer book five times a day and just read designated sections out loud, but in quiet tones.
As long as people are good, I don't care what they believe.
I had an orthodox girlfriend once. It was a great relationship.

A loving omnipotent god couldn't have managed better than that? Something more than Her occasional get out of jail free card?
Nevertheless, I'll never understand those who pray to and follow the orders of asshole gods.
Gods who preach hate are bad gods.

(3,994 posts)Still, I have met some wonderful, truly decent, top-notch people, who are believers. It's not for me to take it from them.
When people preach love, I don't question the source. I say, "Hi friend."

Not so much now. Now? Tough. Not sorry. You made your bed.
What's unfortunate is that affluent people - in this case almost all white - can withstand the financial impact of the death of a parent. Life insurance, surviving parent in a well paying job, family financial support, etc.
But what about those less fortunate? The "rubes." The low end of the financial spectrum. The ones who need two incomes to survive. They are being devastated by following the idiocy of their fellow RW travelers. There was a piece in the WP today about one such (now) single mother with young kids.
Maybe the deathbed conversions or the posthumous encouragement by survivors to get vaccines is a good thing, and so the publicizing of these situations may be good.
But, you know, a part of me just doesn't want to hear it.

(14,959 posts)their hateful or dumbassed decisions. YOU decided to be dangerously negligent, not god. That's not god talking to you, those are your own thoughts. Own up to it without the dodge.
You can tell a lot about what someone thinks, feels, or wants by what they say God says/wants. Shockingly ( ), there is almost always a 1:1 correlation!

(19,038 posts)They use god to absolve themselves of taking responsibility for their actions and choices. God had zero to do with it, it was all them, they chose to follow Trump and it killed them, they didn't care one bit about the suffering in death until it was affecting them.
The only thing I say is send this guy home, he doesn't deserve to take care away from those who got vaccinated. Let them bring him home and pray on it.

(81,220 posts)I regret that I've come to the "tough love" view of people like her, but that's what I've come to. The truth is out there and so are all the experts and the statistics and the facts and the science. And yet you'd rather follow the snake oil salesmen and embrace the lies (including the Big Lie). Maybe you folks just have to learn these lessons the hard way.

This is the epitome of stupid. I have zero sympathy for this idiot and her clan. Yes there is a lot of fun false information out there... and if you prefer to listen to a bunch of idiots over actual experts in the field, and you actually may get what you deserve.
