Giuliani told agents it was okay to 'throw a fake' during political campaign

Rudolph W. Giuliani’s promise of a “big surprise” to help Donald Trump’s election in October 2016 led to Democratic accusations the FBI was feeding him secrets about an investigation of Hillary Clinton.

But a newly obtained transcript shows the former New York mayor told federal agents it was okay to “throw a fake” when campaigning, to which his then-law partner added, “there’s no obligation to tell the truth.”

Giuliani’s comments came in a 2018 interview with agents for the Justice Department inspector general, conducted in a room at Trump’s hotel in downtown Washington. The Project on Government Oversight, a government watchdog group, sued for a copy of the interview transcript and provided it to The Washington Post on Wednesday.

Giuliani’s private defense of his actions has come to light as he and other Trump lawyers face discipline and possible court sanctions for their unfounded statements surrounding the 2020 election, raising questions about lawyers’ integrity in a democracy.

2. I believe the point in this story is being missed

This is the second iteration, with more detail, of the OIG report released a while ago in which Giuliani "admits to lying" about receiving inside information from the FBI.

Here's the thing...

The investigation was into whether people within the FBI was, or was not, leaking information to Giuliani or others prior to Comey's bizarre announcement and walkback in 2016.

Giuliani appears to have had foreknowledge of that event.

However, he also knows that (a) lying to the press is not a crime, but (b) being engaged in compromising FBI investigations is.

So, it's a much better position for him to say that he was lying to the press during the campaign, than to admit that he was in contact with a mole in the FBI.

IMHO, the operative lie is his statement to the FBI that he was lying to the press.

Thanks to your input, I now I understand the rational for him to openly admit he was lying to the press rather to admit contact with a mole. It seems obvious now that you pointed it out.

As far as other moles in the FBI, there must be dozens if not more. . Christopher Wray surely knows
