Human rights groups welcomed Indonesia's decision to stop abusive "virginity tests" on female recruits seven years after the World Health Organization declared they had no scientific validity. (AP Photo/Tatan Syuflana, File)
Army Chief of Staff Gen. Andika Perkasa said the army will no longer subject women to invasive tests in which the inspectors used their fingers to assess whether the hymen was intact.
He said applicants should only be assessed on their ability to take part in physical training and that the military would emphasize whether they have color blindness and the condition of their spines and hearts to ensure they are healthy and will not encounter life-threatening medical issues.
These improvements make us focused, effective and precise, and (ensure) that we have direction, Perkasa told reporters on Tuesday during annual U.S.-Indonesia joint military drills in North Sulawesis Minahasa district.
He said the armys hospital directors and medical officers have been informed of the new procedures since May.

Besides, what does it matter? The best female soldier I ever knew had four kids. Her name was Sharon Linda Groff Collins, and she was one of my company commanders in the 101st. When company commanders take office they generally do something to prove how tough they are
and normally its finding some poor dumb bastard and screwing him to the wall for some minor misdeed he did. Oh no, not 36-year-old Sharon Collins with her two Masters and one Doctorate. Captain Collins decided to prove how tough she was by getting the maximum score on the PT test
on the 18-year-old male chart. And then she sent her driver (every company commander has a commanders driver) back to his platoon where he was needed, got a Jeep license and did her own driving. Needless to say, the entire company liked her a lot.
Colonel McGuinness had a tradition: when a new commander took office he would give him or her a sealed bag of Nonjudicial Punishment forms. You would return it at the end of your year in office, and hed count the forms to see how good your leadership was. Captain Collins brought the bag to her first formation and told us dont make me open this! We didnt. The colonel knew her from when she was battalion personnel officer and knew she took no shit whatsoever
if she didnt use nonjudicial punishment, she didnt need to.
Sadly, I dont think shed survive in the post-Obama Army. Trumps Army required toadies who display fealty to the Orange God, and she wouldnt have gone along.
