Why Only 28 Percent of Young Black New Yorkers Are Vaccinated

Per NY Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/12/nyregion/covid-vaccine-black-young-new-yorkers.html

"As the Delta variant courses through New York City, many young Black New Yorkers remain distrustful of the vaccine.

A construction site safety manager in Queens said that as a Black man, he was more worried about the prospect of being stopped by the police than he was about getting Covid-19.

A graduate student in the Bronx who had not gotten vaccinated said her worst fears seemed confirmed when a vaccine that the government was directing to Black and poorer neighborhoods was briefly suspended over a small number of dangerous blood clots.

And a civil rights activist in the Bronx said he grew suspicious when he heard last year that politicians were prioritizing minority neighborhoods for coronavirus vaccinations.

“Since when does America give anything good to Black people first?” said the activist, Hawk Newsome, a 44-year-old Black Lives Matter leader who is unvaccinated.

All three situations reflect a trend that has become a major concern to public health experts: Young Black New Yorkers are especially reluctant to get vaccinated, even as the Delta variant is rapidly spreading among their ranks. City data shows that only 28 percent of Black New Yorkers ages 18 to 44 years are fully vaccinated, compared with 48 percent of Latino residents and 52 percent of white residents in that age group."

If someone is mistreating animals, for example, we don’t hesitate to shame them

All stupid excuses, which are certainly not limited to the black community. I'm more worried about getting stopped by the police than COVID??? I'm more worried about my breast cancer coming back than I am about COVID, but that doesn't mean I can't get vaccinated. I have to say, I'm really surprised at the reaction to the vaccine. And I'm not talking about the habitual nutjobs. I mean intelligent people, some in my own family, not anti-vaxers, not Trumpists, not usually conspiracy nuts...

is a typical MAGAT, apparently. There has to be better community outreach for at-ridk populations. This is sad

People who are so gleeful about Covid deaths - are they happy about children who die, black people who die, Democrats who die? Or are they assuming that it’s only unvaxxed trumpers who die?

Because it isn’t.

Such as requirement to be vaccinated to do different things like hold a certain job.

This is not a society with a government with the forces to wage a massive vaccination campaign. If this virus was ten times deadlier, the country would be fucked.

7. confirmation bias at work

The grad student should know better than to use confirmation bias. Hopefully her school will mandate vaccines or her advisor.

I don't care about the reasons anymore -- too many people are dying needlessly.

They wouldn't take the carrot -- staying alive themselves doesn't matter,. That's fine.

No entry to schools, only can work from home (try that construction site manager), no use of restaurants or public transportation without proof of vaccination.

I am sick of people's selfishness that has me back in my basement WFH again because they won't get vaccinated and wear a mask in public again. I haven't been put in public without a mask for almost 18 months. I am back to only car pick up for deliveries.

I live in Covid Kimmy's Iowa and my vaccinated son will be swirling in delta all day in a poorly ventilated building -- hopefully our district will stand up to her and the rest of the Covidiots and mandate masks (in accordance with county health guidelines).

Get on board or face consequences -- illness, financial, etc.

I cannot tolerate this from any group anymore.
