I learned last night that one of my cousins has COVID and is very sick. She's a little older than me (in her late 60's) and she got it from her daughter, who got it from her boyfriend. None were vaccinated and my cousin is an unapologetic Trumper. We clashed in the past so she blocked me on her cell phone and on FB. I had to find out from another relative.
She was taken to the hospital where they gave her an "infusion" (her words) and sent her home. Why? Because there were no beds available since they started transferring patients up from southern Missouri. She was running a high fever (over 103) and coughing her guts up, but home she went since they didn't feel she needed intubation. She lives alone and family members have been dropping food and supplies on her doorstep. This sounds like it could go either way. My feeling are conflicted. Saying I'm sorry she got this would be the moral high ground, but there's no doubt she brought it on herself.
Hard on the heels of that phone call I got a message from another cousin in Houston. Her two pre-teen grandsons were sent home from school after only 2 days back. One is COVID positive for sure and they both have strep. She said both are spreading through the schools like wildfire in her area.
As if I needed more reasons to stay home. Stay safe everyone!

(30,996 posts)I really hope your cousin gets better. Im just tired of people getting sick and dying as I am tired of the excuses for not getting vaccinated. Its very bad for the morale of the whole country

(11,572 posts)We've reached that point. I reserve the small hope that one day they will turn around, but don't really think it will happen without some catastrophic event--to them.

(6,836 posts)if they disappear, it's usually because the catastrophic event happens to all of them at the same time, leaving no one to seduce new recruits. Jonestown. Heaven's Gate. Even the Manson "family," in a smaller way.

(11,572 posts)That seems the most likely.

(6,836 posts)There are too many of them for CoViD to kill them all, and if it could be done, a huge chink of us would be dragged along.
Indictmants may take some out of circulation for a while, but that's not a solution, certainly not a lasting solution.
Their children take out a few of them with their guns also, but not in large numbers (except that any number of senseless deaths is large.

(102,188 posts)It is administered to those within 10 days of symptom onset and NOT sick enough for hospitalization. So, that may be a positive.

(21,417 posts)for its state fair, a huge event that was cancelled last year. The idea for the approval was to get back to normal after the vaccines. That was before delta. Now I shudder to think of all those people crowded together.

(81,179 posts)but Im leaning strongly against it.
Weve been extra cautious and safety-minded since March 2020. Masks for all things at all times. Scrupulous social distancing. Havent gone ANYWHERE except for drives in a closed car. Takeout orders only. Meetings via Zoom ONLY. Phone calls and FaceTime ONLY.
Im not gonna risk it. Besides, were not young n supple anymore. Besides, as careful as you can possibly be, you cant possibly know if the other person near you has been equally cautious and virus free, or is just faking it because personal freedom-freedom is much more important than being considerate of others.
Im grateful both our kids have been equally cautious. And that behavior has kept THEM safe and virus-free all this time. Thank you, God.

(4,168 posts)A co-worker of mine, fully vaccinated, went to a crowded reunion last weekend and then started feeling ill when she got home. She's now arranging for a covid test.

(2,114 posts)News came yesterday. The whole 7-member family. None of them vaccinated, or wearing masks. They were sure "the good lord" would keep them safe.
They are nice folks, but have been swayed by Republican/Russian propaganda and misinformation, as have so many other Americans.
This is a great and needless tragedy. Republican "values" and lies have made it far worse than it would have been otherwise.

(2,671 posts)Of course, she wasn't vaccinated. On the day she died, the daughter of one of my sister's friends who also lived in Missouri died from Covid, as well. She, too, was not vaccinated. When my sister's friend told my sister her daughter was sick, she (also not vaccinated) said, "If she dies, it will be because the Lord needs her in heaven."

Having strep and Covid simultaneously, well I can't even imagine it.

(13,058 posts)Unless of course they are too young or cannot get vaccinated for medical reasons, then if they get sick it's their fault. And especially if they are Trumpers then I do not care.

(1,040 posts)One in the hospital not expected to make it. Yet they are still holding revivals, birthday parties, fish fries, etc. in that county because, as another classmate said, "that's just what we do." Dying to them is like achieving a goal -- they'll be with the Lord and everyone around them will be happy. They don't care if they take others out with them.
