Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsMy 23 yeard old had a COVID related heart attack last night.
My 23 year old daughter had COVID in January, before they were eligible for the vaccine. Even though they constantly wore a mask, limited exposure outside the house, etc, they still had to go to work. Their employer didn't enforce masks in the store, and Kiddo caught the bug. They were down for about a week and had a horrible time with it, then were fatigued for another two weeks or so, but fortunately they weren't bad enough to have to be hospitalized (Their employer threatened to fire them if they didn't get back to work. Turns out the employer was allowing people to work with a positive COVID status because "COVID is fake and the government is using it to give free money to poor people." But that's another topic.). Kiddo got vaccinated as soon as they were eligible.
Fast forward seven months later. I got a call at 3 AM that Kiddo had a heart attack and is being rushed to the ER. I'm able to make the 45 minute drive in 30 minutes, and am there as they go through a battery of tests. EKG, echocardiogram, CT scan, X-ray... looking for blood clots or other damage. After six hours, they determine there is an abnormal inflammation on the interior lining of the chest wall which is putting pressure on the heart. The heart's response was to freak out and mimic all the symptoms of a heart attack (intense chest pain, numbness in chest and left arm, weakness (they collapsed and were unable to support themselves to get to the car), etc). The hospital said it wasn't ACTUALLY a heart attack, it just replicated all the effects, there shouldn't be any permanent scarring of the heart or loss of function. Kiddo's probably going to be on anti-inflammatories for the foreseeable future, and the doc warned them to expect activity limiting fatigue. The doctor said they've been finding this in COVID patients, even those that have been recovered for as long as Kiddo has been. No one has any idea how long it will last or if it will ever go away.
I've buried four family members to COVID so far. I don't want to lose my kid. Yet, with all that, I have family members that "don't believe in COVID / vaccines" and wonder why I've cut them out of my life. I just don't understand.
(Pronoun note: Kiddo is ENBY, they/them. We're still working on a replacement for 'daughter', but using Kiddo / Middle Spawn for now. Not using their name for privacy)

The bosses behavior is going to have life time effects and the case law regarding that level of deliberate assholery needs to be created now.I wish the best for your kiddo.

(32,829 posts)Also a retired Radiographer.I do not have a problem imaging that over the next several decades that the currently unknown/recognized after effects of post covid exposure will have hideous numbers. Currently the retired technologist grapevines are buzzing on testicular/penile problems; not enough for peer reviewed Radiology Societies, or British Med Journal or JAMA, yet. The cardiology affiliated to radiography technologists are doing way way more cardio CTs.
Read the wiki post polio syndrome, after effects in *some* people showed up 30 years after even in very mild cases.
Inflammation in the internal linings of a heart scares me, I only saw that in drug users while I was in practice.

(90,202 posts)As for your headline I used to work in Personnel for the Labor Relations Manager many a long year ago, and if there was one thing I learned it was the value of a paper trail. Weve all heard of it in reference to sexual harassment cases, but it applies to all kinds of employment issues, such as being given hazardous or even illegal orders. Sometimes just called the CYA File.

(612 posts)Feel very much for you and your child. Very scary. Glad it wasn't a heart attack and hopefully new medicines and treatment will work to clear away this inflammation. Hope they are out of the hospital soon and feeling much, much better. Take good care, both of you.

(20,544 posts)but I believe it is the opposite. We are still learning the effects of this illness and lawmakers need to be informed of its full extent. The law needs to protect Kiddo from her employer in this case. If he is setting requirements he needs to face the consequences for them in court.

(127,319 posts)There is so much that they don't know about this virus and what the long term effects will be since it's only been around (in various iterations) for going on 2 years.
It almost sounds like a case of what is called (for that age of 23, which is an over 20) "MIS-A" = "Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Adults" -
https://www.cdc.gov/mis/mis-a.html
https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6940e1.htm
It is similar to the more well-known "MIS-C"= "Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children" (children and adolescents under 20) -

(792 posts)Sounds like they are doing everything by the book but were let down by some of those around them who were not. Being around unvaccinated or non-mask wearers is a scientifically proven risk to all of us until mandates are passed.
Thank you for sharing that information about the ant-inflammatories. Did the doctors say if there were any tests that could be run to catch it? I've heard some doctors say a d-dimer could be a good test to run to detect if an infected person should be placed on anti-inflammatories.
TXPaganBanker
(210 posts)After the echocardiogram, EKG and X-ray came back negative, they did the CT scan which showed the inflammation. Once they had that, they determined it was the instigating factor (forgive me, I don't remember the medical terminology, it was 6 AM and I had been up for more than 24 hours straight at that point).
They're being placed on etodolac to see if it improves the situation.

(4,076 posts)I'm so sorry. I, too, have a 23-year-old ENBY. They have an autoimmune kidney disorder so, got the vaccine as soon as they were eligible. But they still wear a mask everywhere, and we're terrified that they might get a breakthrough infection.
Take care. Sending strength and love.

(3,250 posts)This disease is a plethora of unknowns. I am so sorry to hear this. My heart goes out to kiddo and you. I will keep you all in my thoughts, and hope they will be brought back to full health very soon, with no lingering effects, despite the possibilities.
The people who embrace the idea Ovid-19, is a hoax and get belligerent when they see those of who are wearing a mask in public are violent extremists, who are endangering others.

(33,915 posts)consequences short of death. I get so angry when people here (and elsewhere) treat death as the only consequence worth worrying about. (And then, only if the death occurs to someone who is not old and worthless.) This is a dangerous disease - even when the initial symptoms are mild.
I hope they can take the time they need to recover well. (And, if your state hasn't enacted protections for employees, you might want to consult a lawyer. That is pretty outrageous behavior on the part of their employer.)

(9,988 posts)I'm so glad they're going to be OK - for a certain value of OK in the post-COVID world. And I hope you and the rest of your family can get some rest, when they're home.
There needs to be a reckoning for abusive bosses who force sick people back to work and won't take any precautions to protect their staff. A SERIOUS reckoning.
I don't see enough people talking about this: there are SO MANY people in this country now who have life-changing long-term effects from COVID that might never go away. If there comes a time when COVID isn't in the headlines anymore, will they be forgotten? Will they be stuck with debt forever that they can't ever pay, because they can't work like they used to? Will the insurance companies continue to gouge them? Will anything substantial be done to help them?

Latin noun endings could be used to indicate feminine. masculine.
Kiddo would remain that as a masculine.
E.g. Cato, Cicero. Or use -us for masc. E.g. Brutus, Julius.
