Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Saturday responded to a revolt by conservative Democrats in message praising Social Security.
"A group of nine moderate House Democrats told Speaker Nancy Pelosi that they will not vote for a $3.5 trillion budget blueprint until a Senate-approved infrastructure bill clears the chamber, a posture that underscored significant divisions within the party that could undermine President Biden's economic agenda," The Washington Post reported Friday.
"The demand on Friday threatened to leave the House in a new political deadlock, roughly two weeks before lawmakers are set to return to the Capitol to begin debate. Liberal Democrats have demanded the opposite timeline, leaving Pelosi (D-CA) in a tough bind given that Democrats have a narrow majority and few votes to spare," the newspaper explained.

(13,056 posts)A coalition of nine Democrats plus the Republicans could sink that bill forever.

(26,044 posts)It says "shoots down" in the sense of "publicly opposed," not the sense of "got them to agree to support the budget."
Now that she's opposed them, it remains to be seen whether they will fold their cards or hold out and prevent any budget bill from passing unless they get their way...which would, in itself, pretty much kill any infrastructure achievements.
Right now, the ball is in the ConservaDems' court, and the outcome is anything but clear.

(13,909 posts)that well get a good bill. It very well may be negotiated down from 3.5 trillion but it will still be a big win for the country.

(52,152 posts)but the Senate never would have passed it anyhow. Frankly there is a ton of blame to go around on that. No matter what one thinks of the SCOTUS position on this they were clear. Any thing like a permanent solution will take an act of Congress and that should have been planned for over a month ago.

(16,073 posts)they berate the more liberal members of congress.
They are strangely silent about these particular members.
Weird. I wonder what who this serves?
Isn't this the same group that opposed Nancy Pelosi for speaker?

(15,551 posts)Pelosi did not comment directly on the letter from the moderates, nor on the two-track linkage of the bills, only to the Dems unity in passing Bidens agenda.
A better, less click baity headline would have been:
Pelosi shoots down media narrative of Dems in discord and disarray.
