Welp, TN GOP Sen. Bill Hagerty's weekly sanctimonious Bible verse backfired big time.

He gave the wrong citation for the verse he used. Freudian slip? Intern sabotage? Laziness? Stupidity? You decide.

(OK, but if you look up Luke 16:14 in the bible, this is the actual verse:
New Inernational Version:
"The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus." )

That’s John 14:1

Luke 16:14 is about money-grubbing Pharisees

I can see confusing a verse number (and that was from the New Testament). But that is like way off! There are really only 4 Gospels.

They just make up whatever they want to believe and then try to justify it with a few Bible verses taken out of context.

There are literally dozens of verses calling lying a sin and an abomination, yet many so-called Christian Republicans lie constantly and accepted the thousands of lies Trump told and is still telling. Yet homosexuality is barely mentioned in the Bible ( and some argue that even these references have been misinterpreted or taken out of context), but LGBTQ are an abomination to them while lying is not.

To my knowledge, there is one part of the Bible that speaks of abortion (without calling it that) and it is for a priest to use herbs to bring on aa miscarriage if her husband believes she has been unfaithful. Sounds like approved abortion to me. It’s in Numbers.

Today’s white evangelicals are mostly utter hypocrites and white supremacists. I hope they wither away over the next several years.

Gospel of John. They are Jesus' words to his disciples before his crucifixion.

The Gospel of John has a tone that is different from the other Gospels, therefore should be easily recognized as the source of a quote. Any clergy or anyone who claims to knowledge of the Bible should know that. The quote from John is often used at Christian funerals.
