AP: US mulls COVID vaccine boosters for elderly as early as fall

WASHINGTON (AP) — Warning of tough days ahead with surging COVID-19 infections, the director of the National Institutes of Health said Sunday the U.S. could decide in the next couple weeks whether to offer coronavirus booster shots to Americans this fall.

Among the first to receive them could be health care workers, nursing home residents and other older Americans.

Dr. Francis Collins also pleaded anew for unvaccinated people to get their shots, calling them “sitting ducks” for a delta variant that is ravaging the country and showing little sign of letting up.

“This is going very steeply upward with no signs of having peaked out,” he said.

1. They should just allow anyone who wants to get a booster now, get it. Why the waiting period?

Vaccines are available with no appt necessary and some states are having to throw away unused vaccines. The CDC has really failed with their messaging regarding COVID and the vaccines.

But it makes me nuts that doses are expiring!

Saw a headline a few days ago that millions of doses will expire soon.

Why not let elders & first line med folks have them? Or ship them to countries in need! 😢

I agree about CDC.

You're right, air drop them in countries where they have none. Maybe that isn't reasonable, but certainly something could be done to first give them to those who have none.

Boosters are not approved yet for anyone other than those who are immunocompromised. How is that a fail?

6. Because they are already saying that others will likely need a booster in the fall. Why wait until

the Fall when they know NOW others will need the boosters. There's plenty of us over the age of 50 that will gladly get a booster shot now if we're allowed.

8. Just because two shots are good does not inherently mean 3 are better.

Even more critical - it does not mean that 3 are not harmful.

Just like they tested the initial dose to determine what is effective, they need to test boosters to make sure they are safe and effective.
