https://www.statnews.com/2021/08/13/elective-surgeries-delayed-again-doctors-response/In the past month, Tampas BayCare Health System has seen a tenfold increase in Covid-19 patients at its 14 acute care hospitals in central Florida. Expecting this surge to get worse, its executives decided to pause elective surgeries starting Saturday to avoid staffing shortages.
The last thing we want to do is get into a bind where weve got more demand than we have resources and run the risk of patients being jeopardized, said Glenn Waters, executive vice president of BayCare.
In Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott wrote a letter to the Texas Hospital Association earlier this week urging hospitals to consider pausing elective surgeries as the more transmissible Delta variant fuels mounting Covid hospitalizations there as well. Many hospitals such as Ben Taub Hospital in Houston were already pausing procedures because of concerns with resources, and others are now evaluating surgeries on a case-by-case basis to determine if they can be postponed.
More at link. Addresses harm to people having to wait (due to anti vaxers clogging medical facilities!). This is SO wrong on so many levels!

(14,856 posts)She needs a simple, outpatient surgery to relieve debilitating pain. She can't get it. This is in Florida.

(57,073 posts)Can she travel to a sane state?
I really wish hospitals would send willfully unvaxed home with an rx for oxygen.
Why are they allowed to break our healthcare system? Makes no sense to me.

(14,856 posts)She could come to my house and have it done here, but then she'd have to find a neurosurgeon here to do the procedure. In the end it would probably take as much time as waiting it out, plus she'd have the stress and the pain and expense of making the trip in the first place. Also, there's no guarantee that the hospitals won't get clogged here as well - my state has one of the highest vaccination rates, but school is starting soon and masks or no masks, the kids will spread it among themselves, and then to the remaining unvaccinated. What a fucked up situation.

(57,073 posts)Yes, you raise some valid points.
I truly cannot comprehend why the hospitals are allowing this.

(57,073 posts)No brainer to me.

(16,924 posts)Any chance the Hospitals decide to start OUTSIDE covid stations, for the unvaxxed? The hell with them! They should be the LAST ones to enter a hospital! It's time they were treated like they are. NO FUCKING HOSPITAL CARE.

(36,745 posts)Just common sense, really.
Give them the same level of care from the 1918 pandemic.
Palliative care.
