This Afghanistan thing should be an "emperor has no clothes" moment for the American public...

But it probably won't be, at least not in the way it ought to be (of course there is always the likelihood that we'll learn the wrong lesson).

How many times in the last two decades have elected officials, diplomats, generals, and pundits told the American people "we need to do X, or wait until after event Y, so we can have a stable Afghanistan" and how many times have the goalposts been moved to different Xs and Ys?

All of those different Xs and Ys we spent time, money, blood... and finally checked the box on... and for what? We could have left Afghanistan the day after OBL was snuffed (half of the time we've been there) and the result would have been the same.

When are the American people going to decide the "experts" telling them why we need to use our military for this or that are fools and/or liars? How else can one explain "serious" people pursuing twenty years of this course of action for it to burn up like tissue paper?
