Dr Fauci DISMISSES Mayo Clinic study that claims Pfizer COVID vaccine is only 42% effective at preventing Delta variant infection while Moderna is 76% as he says both should be used as booster shots

Dr Anthony Fauci has dismissed a preliminary study whose findings suggest a Moderna shot is more effective at preventing a COVID Delta infection than a Pfizer one.
Asked about the study - done by biotech firm nfrence, which is based at the prestigious Mayo Clinic and Cambridge, Massachusetts, the White House COVID tsar said: 'That study
is a pre-print study, it hasn't been fully peer-reviewed.'
Speaking on CBS's Face the Nation, Fauci added: 'I don't doubt what they're seeing, but there are a lot of confounding variables in there, about when one was started, the relative amount of people in that cohort who were Delta vs Alpha right now, if we get boosters
it's clear we want to make sure we get people, if possible, to get the boost from the original vaccine.'

theres a lot we cant state with certainty.
Fauci was questioning need for a booster not too long ago and I understand why but that seems in question now.

(70,681 posts)My uninformed impression was that they were different in content or intensity.
So with the coming 3rd dose, is it the same?

(35,300 posts)No additional booster formulation's gotten approval, so if #3 isn't the same it's in violation of law and regulation.
Given things these days, I'd almost expect that to be the case, though.

(5,166 posts)I've read the CVS and Walgreen are giving many.
So I'm assuming those people are being given the same as those getting number one and number two shot.
I personally will not go for third until I'm told that is the correct thing for me individually.
In other words, not going to jump the line,(even though I realize there is at this time plenty to go around in the USA.

(70,681 posts)As for going when qualified, me too, but will go as soon as I can get it. It's just that we're caught between tons of bits of info and other bits contradicting. One bit was that one of my meds is a qualifier. And I'm 74 so waiting for the Fall is not a problem - unless my 2+ wears off and I catch it!
So you agree that the two or 3rd doses are the *SAME* content?

(5,166 posts)OTOH, I have not heard nor read that there is another formula for the booster.
Just an amateur here, but trying to use logic.

(5,007 posts)He could be telling us that so people will not demand Moderna over Pfizer. Reminds me of when he said masks were not needed. He did it because he knew they did not have enough masks. I also think he knew we needed boosters when Pfizer announced it months ago. They waited until now to admit that we would need them. I think they said that to keep us from flocking to the stores to get shots.

The headline is misleading. Fauci did not dismiss the results, but questioned the changing dynamics that may not be an accurate representation. Even the authors of the study suggested the same
Not peer reviewed
Lot of confounding variables in there like when one was started vs other, relative amount of ppl in the cohort delta vs alpha
Original dose of moderna is 3x of pfizer

There are plenty of both vaccines available in the US now, so people should have no problem requesting one they prefer
The most important observation is that both tend to prevent serious complications
