The middle east has been a cradle of oppression and prejudice for thousands of years. We brought nothing to afganistan that they weren't already well versed in.

But actually the US and Taliban have quite a few traits in common.

men in the US treat women a thousand percent better than in Afghanistan. But we do have a long way to go.

in Afghanistan under the Taliban.

I know it's in jest, but it's still WAY better in the USA, by orders of magnitude, and the peril those people are facing is not really worthy of any sort of mirth IMHO.

us what is going on over in Afghanistan. Oppressive, fanatically religious totalitarianism.

She will probably be caught and become some sex slave for one of the mullahs…

Or die.

If I was faced with that choice, I would rather die.

There is a qualitative difference in the degree and extremity of the societal Misogyny in the US and Afghanistan, and you know it.

13. Even just the history of pre-9/11 Afghanistan.

I joined DU just prior to 9/11 (August 2001); I've been shocked at the lack of institutional memory here of late.

The Taliban were awful in the late 90s, just stunningly brutal and oppressive. They hosted Al Qaeda and facilitated the 9/11 attack by doing so. They deserved everything they got in 2002, and worse.

Our endless occupation increased the literacy rate in the nation, and lowered the infant mortality rate. It allowed Afghan women a taste of freedom, albeit temporary. Music was played again.

This is not funny.

And twice in church on Sunday.

As a gay man, I loathe when people make comparisons between America and fundamentalist nations in other parts of the world. It's facile and unserious.

Watching teenagers get hanged in Iran by the government. Yeah, my teenage years in an Irish Catholic family were just like that!

Except for the part where it was nowhere even remotely close.

Too bad we can't arrange a swap, we send them our neckbeards and they send us the women who have or want education.

Looks like a good deal to me.
