(102,225 posts)(with cross-over credit for AP history)--along with Lawrence of Arabia decades ago. It stuck with me. If only some of our politicos (and more of our military leaders for that matter) had done so.
History repeats itself, as it has with every "conquerer" or "nation-builder" in Afghanistan dating back to Alexander the Great through the Soviets, Brits, and yes, the US.
No one had to be a seer. Just an observer of the lessons of history and had an appreciation for cultural competency/respect, and a less arrogant and far more restrained view of "American Exceptionalism."
We repeat our mistakes and never seem to learn from them--whether with respect to Iran--before and after the Shah-- Vietnam, or our Middle East endeavors (and elsewhere).
And, no, I'm NOT on twitter.

(11,730 posts)Along with the Wilsonian ideal of "exporting democracy".
There are people that simply believe that because we are American, that we are right and that we should get to call the shots. Like the British, French, Roman's, etc... before us, we can't seem to understand why the people of Germania, would just not yield and live like Romans. We don't know why Afghanis would not want to adapt our standards. Also because we haven't taken the time to learn that empires and countries have been invading Afghanistan for thousands of years and they just want to be left alone.
