The Bay of Pigs embarrassed JFK, but he weathered that.

That, too, was an intelligence failure that JFK inherited from his predecessor. He got through it and remained one of our most beloved presidents.

The Afghanistan situation also reminds me of Harry Truman's circumstances. He made several hard decisions that diminished his popularity at the time, but history came to deem him a forward-thinking, responsible president.

It may be that Biden shares responsibility with some aspects of how messy the final withdrawal has unfolded, and our heart breaks for the people of Afghanistan, but proclamations of this being the end of Biden's presidency, doom in the midterms, and a stain on our country's legacy are probably hyperbolic. It's the big headline this week, and Republicans are shameless, but no one can predict the future, and ultimately, Biden may come to be broadly appreciated for being the one with the strength to end this entanglement.

But there is a big difference to me. Kennedy really made a mistake by going forward with what basically turned out to be a harebrained idea.

Biden, in my mind, has done the right thing. Was there an intelligence failure? I believe so. The fact that it was believed that the Afghan military would fight turned out to be magical thinking. Regardless, Afghanistan was a lost war from the very beginning and Biden has done the right thing in getting us out of there.

Will Biden get past this? Of course he will.

3. Don't think it is near end of his presidency, but there are only so many silver bullets.

I’m hopeful committing troops for a short time will avoid mass killings. And I wish when asked days ago if he was concerned about another Saigon, he’d said “that is up to the Afghan government and military that we have set up to prevail.”

JFK backed off at the last minute and said no. It was hardly an "intelligence failure".

6. Our troops will complete their mission remove as many as possible. Biden will weather this too.

When our troops are done other demanding issues will be front and center.
Right now this is the hottest story for tv pundits and republicans and Biden haters both sides.

So I really don't think President Biden has much to worry about.
