I just don't understand why they invest so much time and effort in bipods. There are certainly more effective configurations. However, I am sure that Asimov would be proud of these creations. R. Daneel Olivaw may be coming sooner than we think.

(1,718 posts)More efficient movement than 4 legs with less energy spent, the body stands upright and can dissipate heat better and faster. Humans may not be as strong or fast as other animals but we beat them all in endurance.

(37,748 posts)They are in fact, two wholly separate concepts.
Be more accurate, indeed.

(415 posts)The average human will not outlast a horse or wolf. A trained distance runner would, again depending on some of the conditions mentioned. Accuracy indeed.
Because of their ability to sweat humans have an advantage in hot weather. In cold weather a wolf will have the advantage.
In the man vs horse marathon held every year since 1980, the horse has won every year but two.

(3,858 posts)You have forgotten a very important detail. Outrun at what distance? Humans can easily outrun horses, if the distance is long enough. We are far more efficient runners.

(1,954 posts)Humans are scary-efficient hunters in what's known as Pursuit Predation; We may not have a higher top speed, but we have infinitely higher endurance than almost any other animal in the Kingdom; Sure, a Cheetah can outrun a human in a 100m dash, but Humans are designed to hunt over miles, dozens of miles, hundreds. It wasn't uncommon for early hunters to simply walk/track/hunt an animal to death; Its heart would give out or it would collapse from exhaustion while the humans just walk behind it, waiting for it to die.
Imagine running from a predator, outrunning it easily, so you lay down, take a nap. You wake up to find the predator about to overtake you, so you run again; You run far and fast, but you're tired, so you lay down. Midway through your sleep, ITS BACK AGAIN. It won't stop. It can't stop. No matter where you run, there it is; Whenever you lay your head down, you hear the rustle in the bushes of the hunter. It's always coming, and it will never stop. Eventually, your body broken and exhausted, you collapse, and darkness overtakes you. That's pursuit predation, and humans are the very best at it.
To most animals, the average human may as well be a damn Terminator.

(5,376 posts)Who was it that said about technology and war: "if it could be done, it will be done."
Autonomous AI drones, no ground controller needed, will probably replace piloted fighter jets in the next 10 years.
Welcome to the future.

(15,204 posts)...on the plus side I doubt the robots can perform this kind of activity for longer than 10-15 minutes before someone has to plug them in for a recharge.
I'll admit those are just numbers I pulled out of my ass, but whatever the real time limit is, you can bet battery life is a big limiting factor for now, and for sometime into the future. Even single-digit hours of use greater than two right now would surprise the hell out me.

(24,885 posts)Will be at the front end of The Awakening of the artificial intelligence and then once it figures out how to use the little robots and the little robots will have a brain and then we'll either have to talk them down from taking over or we'll have to fight them to the death.
Or they just continue to be expensive toys until we all die. I doubt that.
