This clown Abbott whose policies are endangering the health of children and the general population; is fully vaccinated, has no symptoms, gets tested anyway (why?) and once he test positive gets a booster shot prior to the eight month standard being applied to the rest of us and on top of that gets monoclonal antibody treatment!
And the right wing complains about former President Obama being an elitist for throwing a 60th birthday bash?!? Seriously!

(16,784 posts)The media must make hay about this because the average American under 65 will not have access to such treatment.
A cousin on my Husband's Maternal Grandmother's side of the family had that treatment after contracting the Delta variant, though vaccinated, was well over 65 and had the treatment covered. Not everyone will be that lucky.

In July (sic 2020), the company signed a contract with the government for $450 million to supply the treatment.
At the time, Regeneron said that under the contract it would produce enough doses to treat anywhere from 70,000 to 1.3 million cases of COVID-19, with a more exact number of patients to be treated based on the severity of their symptoms.
Regeneron has since said that it plans to supply enough doses to treat roughly 300,000 patients under its government contract. That comes out to a cost of about $1,500 per treatment. But if Regeneron's doses only end up treating 70,000 patients, that translates into $6,500 per treatment.
Still, the company said in a statement that if emergency authorization for REGN-COV2 is granted, under the terms of its contract with the U.S. "the government has committed to making these doses available to the American people at no cost, and [the government] would be responsible for their distribution."

(128,897 posts)had to make sure their buddy Phil Griffin (who owns the 2nd largest amount of stock in the company) was taken care of.
I expect that this is one of those things where if your provider is not "in the know" you'd never get it.
And the irony is that some of the excuses for refusal of a vaccine was because they were "only" authorized via an EUA but they would take the Regeneron in a heartbeat despite it "only" being authorized via an EUA.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis who has been criticized for opposing mask mandates and vaccine passports is now touting a COVID-19 antibody treatment in which a top donors company has invested millions of dollars. DeSantis has been flying around the state promoting Regeneron, a monoclonal antibody treatment that was used on then-President Donald Trump after he tested positive for COVID-19. The governor first began talking about it as a treatment last year.Citadel, a Chicago-based hedge fund, has $15.9 million in shares of Regeneron Pharmaceutical, according to filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Citadel CEO Ken Griffin has donated $10.75 million to a political committee that supports DeSantis $5.75 million in 2018 and $5 million last April. Its not unusual for hedge funds to have a wide range of investments. And BlackRock, which has primarily donated to Democratic candidates, though has also donated substantially to Republicans, has a large holding in the company - more so than Citadel. DeSantis ramped up the call for Floridians to seek out monoclonal antibody treatments in August as coronavirus cases spiked. Hes held news conferences at treatment sites and a Tampa hospital touting the effectiveness of the drug if people receive treatment soon after testing positive.
Early treatment with these monoclonal antibodies Regeneron and others have proven to radically reduce the chances that somebody ends up being hospitalized, DeSantis said Monday at a treatment site in Orlando. Reducing hospital admissions has got to be a top priority. Experts agree with him. The drugs, when given within 10 days of initial symptoms, have been shown to cut rates of hospitalization and death by roughly 70%.
We definitely need treatments like monoclonal antibodies that can prevent mild disease from progressing to severe disease. Ultimately, its still best to prevent someone from contracting COVID-19 in the first place, said Dr. Leana Wen, public health professor at George Washington University and former Baltimore Health Commissioner. Monoclonal antibodies are not prevention. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday and is receiving Regeneron treatments. Like DeSantis, he has been opposed to mask mandates in public schools. He was vaccinated in December.

(2,568 posts)getting monoclonal antibody treatment is expensive but is FAR less expensive than the crazy amount of $$ the hospital bill will be when someone gets admitted with covid. I'll probably get hammered for this but IMHO...those who come down with covid when they chose not to get vaccinated (because their rights would be violated) shouldn't have access to any health care at all whether they have insurance or not.

(9,895 posts)They should not receive hospitalizations, treatments or even a goddamn room....put them in tents in the parking garage and give them water from a hose.
I am sick and tired of this entire fucked up society that allows these monsters like Desantis and Abbott and TFG to not only trash the medicine and science behind all of the modern treatments that fight this disease, but also allows them to profit off of the entire obscene situation. They should be in jail and the asshats that they inspire to protest masks and vaccines and common sense measures to tamp down airborne pathogens should be made to suffer the consequences of their decision in isolation from the rest of society.

(13,920 posts)The rich and powerful recieve elite treatment at every level of every system, and we as a nation have accepted that this is the way of things, and there is nothing to be done about it.
That doesnt mean we wont all complain about it when its not one of "our" sides rich and powerful. But we all accept it with relatively little pushback.
