Third Pfizer dose 86% effective in over 60s, Israeli HMO says

TEL AVIV, Aug 18 (Reuters) - A third dose of Pfizer (PFE.N)/BioNTech's (22UAy.DE) COVID-19 vaccine was found to be 86% effective in people aged over 60, an Israeli healthcare provider said on Wednesday, citing initial results from a study of thousands of members.

Israeli HMO Maccabi, which covers around a quarter of the country's 9.3 million population, compared results from 149,144 people aged over 60 who received their third dose at least a week ago against those from 675,630 more who had received only two doses, between January and February.

Some 37 people tested positive for coronavirus after their third jab, compared with 1,064 positive cases among those who had received only two doses, Maccabi said in a statement. The comparison groups had similar demographic profiles, it added.

2. Excellent. My husband got his 3rd Pfizer shot 2 days ago and he's over 60.

The reaction he had to the 3rd shot was similar to the 2nd shot. He was run down yesterday and took a long nap but he appears to feel fine today.

3. Apart from the obvious ease of production and human testing issues, why not reformulate the vaccines

The flu vaccine is reformulated every year. Why not these COVID vaccines, too? If a third dose produces this high of an effective response, why not go even higher with one specifically formulated for the Delta and Lambda variants?

10. I believe Moderna is working on this. Checked their website a couple days ago

and they were having clinical trials on a updated vaccine with some changes targeting Delta.

5. Although the CDC is gathering data I feel they are way behind the 8 ball and relying a lot

on data from other countries like Israel to make their decisions, like the fact that delta is breaking through more frequently and with more serious illness than initially reported. It feels like the CDC is following not leading.

Still I will be there lining up for my third jab 8 months post 2nd jab and glad to do so!!

..where they can lower the age limit even a couple years at a time.
I do believe they are dedicated to & will get to that goal.
