Obama campaign reports raising over $68 million in 4th Q of 2011; 98% of donations were $250 or less

(CNN) – President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign announced Thursday that they raised more than $42 million over the past three months, with the Democratic National Committee bringing in more than $24 million in the fourth quarter of last year.

In a video to supporters, Obama re-election campaign chairman manager Jim Messina also announced that 1.3 million people have now contributed to the Obama re-election campaign, and that 98% of all donations were $250 or less, with the average donation around $55.

Messina said the re-election campaign and the DNC combined brought in around $68 million in the October through December fundraising period. Top re-election officials had said their goal was to raise a combined $60 million in the fourth quarter.

The re-election campaign and the DNC raised a combined $70 million in the third quarter, and brought in around $86 million in the second quarter of 2011. The president’s re-election campaign was started up in early April of last year. The DNC’s role in 2012 is to assist the president’s re-election bid, as well as help Democratic members of Congress and Democratic congressional candidates in their races for office.

We are going to need every penny of it.

I can see why the GOP has all of a sudden become so hysterical about "Taking the money out of politics."

I am old enough to remember when there were never any complaints about too much money being in politics. That all changed when we finally found someone who is really good at fundraising.

Amazing how easily people fall for this though.

Or, will he continue to have the bulk of his fundraising from the people, and STILL, not prosecute the banksters, and tow the corporate line?

The whole point of generating the vast majority of his fundraising from small, individual donors, is to remain independent from corporate, moneyed influence. I would like to see Obama simply reject ALL donations from corporations and businesses. Only accept donations from living breathing people.

Didn't Obama generate record breaking levels of small donor donations for 2008? Yet, he still appears timid in pushing for what is best for the vast majority of the people, e.g; breaking up TBTF banks, oil companies, public option etc?

I guess the question I need answered is, what is it going to take for Obama to actually become a fighting populist? Since there should be no reprecussions from taking popular stances in terms of losing votes, and Obama seems to be able to raise enough for re-election, and he is not an idealogue by any stretch.....

What the hell is holding him back?!?

I don't think he was asking about legislation so much as wondering when Obama will more vocally come out in support of populist policies. Here's hoping the somewhat more populist rhetoric of late isn't just an election year blip and grows into something more, should Obama hold onto the White House.

First posting in this forum, hello to you all, happy to be here.

I thought that Obama primarily got his campaign fundings from the financial institutions in the 2008 election? Could you - or someone else link a report, or analysis where the money came from? If I were a CEO of a big investment bank, it would be rational to "invest" in my favorite candidate.

Believe it or not, some people who work at banks are natural liberals and donated to Obama as individuals.
