GOP Senator on Intelligence Committee Falsely Tweets US Has 30,000 Troops in Taiwan. Hes Way, Way Off.U.S. Senator John Cornyn, the Republican senior senator from Texas who has served since 2002, on Monday tweeted the U.S. has 30,000 troops in Taiwan, which is false. The U.S. pulled out of Taiwan in 1979. Americas current U.S. military presence in that country is reportedly just 30.
Cornyn sits on the United States Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, which oversees budgets for the civilian and military agencies that comprise the intelligence community, and as such would be expected to know that the 30,000 figure was false.
CNN fact checker Daniel Dale caught the false tweet. He notes it was up for more than 13 hours before being deleted.

The tweet appears to be part of Cornyns attack on President Bidens withdrawal from Afghanistan. Cornyn is very active on social media, frequently tweeting out news reports and his opinions throughout the day.

(11,292 posts)But may I point out that even the dim bulbs have staff? That could supposedly be protecting them from the really egregious misinformation? Somebody is spoon feeding this crapola .... And it's up to somebody in his office to say, "cute Facebook meme - Jimmy (or Joan), you want to see if this checks out before it goes up on our page?"

(714 posts)I've seen the number of US troops in Taiwan quoted as being in the thousands by TV commentators and experts over the last week.
I've only been watching MSNBC and a little bit of CNN.
So apparently Cornyn isn't the only one who is abysmally ignorant....
