Republicans often bring up Sanders when attacking the Democratic plan, which will allow Congress to pass big chunks of President Joe Bidens American Jobs Plan and American Family Plan with a simple majority vote. For instance, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell accused Democrats of wanting to outsource domestic policy to Chairman Sanders, while the NRSC has repeatedly targeted Sanders and the Bernie Budget.
Yet Sanders is also the most passionate advocate for the proposal as well. Sanders pushed hard for expanding Medicare to include coverage of the vision, dental and hearing programs as part of reconciliation, as well as allowing Medicare to negotiate on prescription drug prices. And his message on growing income inequality in the U.S. economy has become an issue both parties talk about frequently. Sanders longtime opposition to trade deals -- which he says often favor corporate America at the expense of workers -- sounds a lot like what became the GOP mantra under former President Donald Trump. ...

(31,340 posts)6. Sanders to tout Democrats' $3.5 trillion budget plan in red Indiana, Iowa
KEY POINTS
Sen. Bernie Sanders will head to Indiana and Iowa this month to promote the $3.5 trillion Democratic budget plan.
As chair of the Senate Budget Committee, Sanders plays a pivotal role in crafting the proposal, which would expand child care and paid leave, extend household tax credits, lower the Medicare eligibility age and invest in climate policy.
Republicans have lined up against the plan in Washington, though public opinion polls suggest broader support among Americans.
Excerpt:
Sanders first stop in West Lafayette, Indiana, sits in the states 4th Congressional District, which Republican Rep. James Baird represents. Trump carried the seat by nearly 30 percentage points last year, according to Daily Kos.
Indiana has two Republican senators, Todd Young and Mike Braun. Both lawmakers voted against the bipartisan infrastructure bill and will likely join their party in opposing Democrats budget plan.
Sanders will hold his Iowa event in Cedar Rapids, which sits in the states 1st Congressional District. Trump carried the seat by about 3 percentage points last year as GOP Rep. Ashley Hinson defeated incumbent Democrat Abby Finkenauer.
Iowa also has two Republican senators in Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst. Grassley voted for the infrastructure plan while Ernst opposed it. Both lawmakers are expected to vote against the Democrats proposal.
