(2,496 posts)so far to the left that Joe Biden doesnt recognize himself in the mirror when he gets up in the morning. Thats also getting stuff done! I have no doubt that these two extraordinary and courageous young women would feel quite at home with AOC, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Presley, Rashida Tlaib, Jamaal Bowman, and Cori Bush. What an incredible group of activists. After all, if THEY dont represent the future of the Democratic Party we might as well kiss the whole shebang good bye.

(25,449 posts)How did policy positions of the Democratic Party change from 2016 to 2020 because of Squad/Bernie?
Warren worked for the Obama administration, has a history of getting things done, does not support a takeover of the Democratic Party -- not connected with Brand New Congress/Our Revolution/Justice Democrats like the others you mention.

(25,449 posts)That the party's shifted to the right for forty years, same economic policies as Republicans, are corrupt elites beholden to wealthy donors/corporations/billionaires, have abandoned the working/middle classes. That if Democrats just fight hard enough they could do anything so that means they don't want anything progressive (pay no attention to not having the votes).
That white people vote Republican because of economic anxiety/being ignored by Democrats. Once things are explained to them by true progressives, there will be an economic class revolution where the 99% rise up against the 1%.
These incorrect beliefs only work on people new to politics. No evidence of any shift to the left except for the usual incremental change of public opinion: ACA made people less afraid of government involvement in health care; states legalizing things like same sex marriage, marijuana; cities and states implementing $15 minimum wage after the Fight for Fifteen turned into a national movement, free college, etc. Obviously Democrats have been the environmentalist party for decades. Classic Democratic policies. Only those unfamiliar with the Democratic Party think Democrats aren't progressive and progressive ideas are new (Medicare for All has been around for decades, Green New Deal was coined by Thomas Friedman in 2007 which President Obama used, Fight for Fifteen started in 2012).
"get things done" was emphasized in the OP - rather than criticizing because there just aren't the votes, and they could be obtained by "fighting harder."

(13,854 posts)Swedish teen environmental activist Greta Thunberg says President Biden isnt doing enough to treat the climate crisis like a crisis, accusing him of being not nearly enough in line with the science on the issue.
Host Mehdi Hasan noted that Biden has rejoined the Paris Climate Accord, named a climate czar, and started to roll back some of former President Donald Trumps environmental policies and then asked her what she would suggest Biden do.
I would just like you to basically just treat the climate crisis like a crisis. They have said themselves that this is an existential threat, she responded, adding that Biden isnt handling it as such.
They are just treating the climate crisis as it was a political topic, among other topics and, yeah, treat it as a crisis, thats the No. 1 step, she added.

When Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez met Greta Thunberg: 'Hope is contagious'
One is Americas youngest-ever congresswoman, the other a Swedish schoolgirl. Two of the most powerful voices on the climate speak for the first time
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/jun/29/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-met-greta-thunberg-hope-contagious-climate
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez enters a boardroom at her constituency office in Queens, New York, after a short delay which, a political aide hopes, hasnt been caused by a constituent waylaying her in the corridor. (They can get really excited to meet her.) Greta Thunberg is in her home in Sweden, her father testing the technology for the video link while the teenager waits in the background. The activists have never met nor spoken but, as two of the most visible climate campaigners in the world, they are keenly aware of each other.
Thunberg, now 16, catapulted to fame last year for skipping school every Friday to stand outside the Swedish parliament, protesting against political inaction over the climate crisis and sparking an international movement, the school strike for climate, in which millions of other children followed suit. Ocasio-Cortez, the Democratic Representative for New Yorks 14th congressional district is, at 29, the youngest woman ever to serve in Congress, whose election over a well-funded incumbent in 2018 was a huge upset to politics-as-usual. She has been in office for less than a year, which seems extraordinary given the amount of coverage she has generated. In February, Ocasio-Cortez submitted the Green New Deal to the US House of Representatives, calling for, among other things, the achievement of net-zero greenhouse gases within a decade and a full transition off fossil fuels, as well as retrofitting all buildings in the US to meet new energy efficient standards.
The Green New Deal, while garnering support from Democratic presidential candidates Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris and Amy Klobuchar, was mocked by speaker Nancy Pelosi (the green dream or whatever they call it), and defeated in the Senate by Republicans. Like Thunberg, however, Ocasio-Cortez gives every appearance of being galvanised by opposition, and has the kind of energy that has won her 4.41 million Twitter followers and makes establishment politicians in her path very nervous.
In the course of their conversation, Ocasio-Cortez and Thunberg discuss what it is like to be dismissed for their age, how depressed we should be about the future, and what tactics, as an activist, really work. Ocasio-Cortez speaks with her customary snap and brilliance that, held up against the general waffle of political discourse, seems startlingly direct. Thunberg, meanwhile, is phenomenally articulate, well-informed and self-assured, holding her own in conversation with an elected official nearly twice her age and speaking in deliberate, thoughtful English. They are, in some ways, as different as two campaigners can get the politician working the system with Washington polish, and the teenager in her socks and leggings, working from her bedroom to reach the rest of the world. There is something very moving about the conversation between these young women, a sense of generational rise that, as we know from every precedent from the Renaissance onwards, has the power to ignite movements and change history.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Its such an honour to meet you!
Greta Thunberg You, too!

Which doesn't really fit with an idea of she being the one who "gets things done" - she's more the type urging people to go all the way, while "the Squad's" Green New Deal is the more practical "this is as far as we can get the USA to go now" approach. As the article says, "the politician working the system with Washington polish, and the teenager in her socks and leggings, working from her bedroom to reach the rest of the world". "Working the system" is "getting things done".
Nixie
(16,950 posts)it doesn't come through. I was talking about the article posted and how it juxtaposed both individuals and how different they were. It emphasizes Ocasio's "coverage" and how she is a polished Washington official. "the politician working the system with Washington polish" "the teenager in her socks and leggings, working from her bedroom to reach the rest of the world."
"working the system" is different from your bedroom as a teenager than Washington elected officials who have nothing but access to media "coverage."
muriel_volestrangler
(101,295 posts)However, Thunberg in no way dismisses the Green New Deal as if it's a "college essay". That's stupid. She says it needs to go further.
Nixie
(16,950 posts)official who has access to vast media coverage, and one works from her bedroom, so are quite different. If you are working in socks from your bedroom, of course its more of an accomplishment to get media coverage than a Washington official insider who seeks out constant media coverage.
Saying the Green New Deal doesnt do enough is a comment every reader could make. Its quite lacking, so she was very polite about it.

(83,718 posts)Greta garnered global attention not because she excelled in school, but because she has bunked school every Friday pioneering the Fridays for Future movement by sitting in front of the Swedish Parliament, protesting inaction against climate change. Some say I should be in school, she confesses, But, why should anyone be made to study for a future when no one is doing enough to save that future?
Greta walks the talk by living an extremely ecofriendly lifestyle. She courageously criticises the worlds super-rich with extra-special needs, saying: Our biosphere is being sacrificed so that rich people in countries like mine can live in luxury. Its the sufferings of the many which pay for the luxuries of the few.
Of politicians she says, For way too long, the politicians and people in power have gotten away with not doing anything at all to fight the climate and ecological crises... But we will make sure that they will not get away with it any longer.
