(6,588 posts)...that will "transform the Middle East" & enforce "pax Americana" at gunpoint like the PNAC (GW Bush administration) did. Democrats may do war for other reasons, but I've never seen them do it because they have delusions of imperial grandeur.

(5,897 posts)When the country is truly threatened, like in WWII, there has to be a war, but it has to be a last resort, and it has to be a total war. I'm talking wartime economy, conscription of all able-bodied, and the overwhelming support of the populace to do what it takes to win. We lacked all of those efforts during the GWOT, which is why we get a second place trophy and the rag-tag Taliban get the first place trophy. They did those things (by one method or another) and we did not.
That said, I hope that there's never another situation where we have to have another war, because unless it meets those criteria, I'll be right there with you in opposition.

(151 posts)If we had a draft that was actually equitable, the American public would vote no to war because they would have some skin in the game. Our children would not be sent to fight endless, needless or trivial wars. Save the children has real meaning.

(36,926 posts)Been a long time but I think so. It was, of course, very controversial, but made sense, like your argument.

(22,632 posts)I remember getting on the scale and trying to decide if I should keep going once I hit 98 pounds at the sight of my protruding hip bones. Not once did my mother question me about it.
My dad was in Vietnam. He had volunteered. He was doing helicopter rescues. I finally quit when he came home a year later. I don't know how I didn't suffer permanent health complications. Whatever the conflict, I'll never stop being a peacenik.

I'm frankly at a loss for words there are so many members here "outraged" we're pulling out of Afghanistan at long last.
Or it's "the way" we we're doing it. When has it ever been any different when we fail to beat the opposition into complete submission?
That was never going to happen in Afghanistan. Just never. Well, sans nuking the country into obliteration. Then maybe we could have done like we did in Japan and Germany? I don't know, but I kinda doubt it even in that scenario.
If I could see that in 2001, why couldn't anyone else?
Scratching my head over the "outrage" in how Biden administration is handling this.
As if it could have been any different or "better".

(843 posts)stand in formation one group behind the other - fire your muskets then move back to allow these behind to move up and fire etc, ad infinitum.
But the colonists fought from behind trees, trenches and anywhere else they were safely covered.
We learned nothing about how to fight locals in Vietnam. They just didn't fight the gentlemanly way! Hey, no fair!
And how many of the dipshits we fought with in Vietnam and knew what was wrong are now in charge but still thinking the only way is might makes right? Dipshits, everyone. Anyone who fought in 'Nam and has run or is running any part of any campaign in Afghanistan, Iraq or some to be your local neighborhood should be discharged or put in charge of latrine care.

(13 posts)So, if China invades Taiwan we should do nothing ? What if Russia decides that Lithuania should be part of Russia?
No sane person wants war but war is just to prevent tyranny.

(2,574 posts)Rooting out the fascist cells and lone wolf nutjobs like Rosenberry is justified from my point of view. The reason so many of these wackos have their own private armories of semi-automatic and customized automatic weapons is so that they can provide weaponry to their like minded fascist cohorts in order to subdue the civilian population if/when they attack our country.
Know who they are and where they are, and they can be shut down before they go to far with their fascist lunacy. A database of who owns semi-automatic war weapons can help lead intelligence agencies to the fascist cells and lone wolves.
Smart fascists don't advertise the fact that they want to end democracy, and install a dictator, on social media. They leave that to their useful idiots, who they know will join them if/when they attack again.
Like the insurrection at the Capitol. Anyone who entered the Capitol during the insurrection should be charged with a felony and sent to prison. Just "going along with crowd" is not a valid justification for joining in on an attack on our country, and it is disappointing, and frightening, that prosecutors and judges are letting insurrectionists get off with just a slap on the wrist, for convenience sake.
