Mike Richards, the executive producer of "Jeopardy!" who was tapped to succeed Alex Trebek as host of the venerable game show franchise, announced Friday he is stepping aside amid recent scrutiny on his past.
"I was deeply honored to be asked to host the syndicated show and was thrilled by the opportunity to expand my role. However, over the last several days it has become clear that moving forward as host would be too much of a distraction for our fans and not the right move for the show," Richards said in a statement.
Richards, who filled in as guest host from late February to early March after Trebek died in November, has faced intense scrutiny in recent weeks over alleged past behavior ... The Ringers Claire McNear reported that
Richards made disparaging comments about women, Jews, poor people, minorities, and Haiti ...
Richards apologized and said in a statement on Wednesday evening:
Its more than clear that my attempts to be funny were not acceptable.

(25,811 posts)Let me clue you in, whistledick. If you think bigotry and misogyny make good comedic material, you should leave humor to professionals. BTW, cant Sony find anyone better to do their executive-producing?

(1,472 posts)and Dave Chapels old and NEW stuff? Professional comedians use all tons of racism, bigotry, etc. The difference is, its satirical or at least supposed that be. Still, implying that professional comedians are above those topics is well wrong

Reportedly, when Alex died many with the show (and my husband ) believed Ken Jennings, who Alex spoke with just 2 days before, would be his successor.
Later, after Richards inserted himself into very popular Ken Jennings' scheduled run (Jennings's schedule would have allowed him to tape the shows Richards hijacked), it became obvious that it was a maneuver both to insert himself into (at the head of) the line of candidates and to start burying Jennings under weeks of other guest hosts. Nothing wrong with competence, of course.
