Zaki Anwari, a teen who had played on the Afghanistan national youth soccer team, died after falling from a U.S. military airplane at Kabul's airport in an attempt to flee the country. Anwari's death was confirmed by Afghanistan's general directorate of Physical Education and Sports on Thursday.
Anwari, who has been identified as either 17 or 19 in different media reports, harbored dreams of becoming a top international soccer player and representing Afghanistan in soccer. 'He dreamed of making Afghanistan a big name on the world stage,' former teammate Rahil Abid told CBS News.
After the Taliban retook control of Kabul on August 15, thousands have been spotted swarming the capital city's airport in desperate bids to escape. Chaos has ensued at the airport as crowds try to board military and civilian flights. Anwari's death is not isolated. According to Reuters, there are reports of several people killed and wounded at the airport in recent days as foreign soldiers and the Taliban try to control the massive crowds.
