Elon Musk says we need universal basic income because 'in the future, physical work will be a choice

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is stepping behind the universal basic income movement because of the potential rise of robots - in fact, he's working on one himself.

During a Thursday presentation on artificial intelligence (AI) hosted by Tesla, Musk said he is working on creating a "Tesla Bot," or a robot that would do "dangerous, repetitive, and boring tasks" so humans don't have to. But Musk recognized that the creation of this robot might take the place of jobs that people are currently getting paid for, which is why he said a guaranteed income will likely be necessary in the future.

"Essentially, in the future, physical work will be a choice," Musk said during the presentation. "This is why I think long term there will need to be a universal basic income," he added.

Musk said that the robot will be "friendly," standing at a height of 5'8'' and reaching speeds up to five miles per hour. But if its creation goes to plan, it will take many people's jobs.

We have been migrating towards a more social country for a while now. Other factors may accelerate that.

purchase things? Rich people can only consume so much. It won't be enough to satisfy the capitalist need for constant growth and profit.

The owners of this country would allow m4a before ubi. They would rather see mass starvation. And to be fair, how would it be paid for unless it's very modest or on a sliding scale?

The future is likely a place where we will need income without physical jobs.

merrily continues to develop them. It makes sense, from a productivity standpoint, but...

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/11/27/elon-musk-robots-of-the-future-need-to-be-regulated.html - NOV 2017

In response to a Twitter post of a humanoid robot made by Boston Robotics jumping up on raised surfaces with the caption, “we dead,” Musk responded with a warning:

“This is nothing. In a few years, that bot will move so fast you’ll need a strobe light to see it. Sweet dreams…” [snip]

“AI is a rare case where I think we need to be proactive in regulation than be reactive,” according to Musk, speaking to the National Governors Association in July.

His call for regulation is because he says the potential for robotics, if left to develop unchecked, threatens human existence. [snip]

“I have exposure to the most cutting-edge AI, and I think people should be really concerned by it,” says Musk. “AI is a fundamental risk to the existence of human civilization in a way that car accidents, airplane crashes, faulty drugs or bad food were not — they were harmful to a set of individuals within society, of course, but they were not harmful to society as a whole.”

If Musk is that concerned, he could get on the phone to get the ball rolling, for AI regulation as well as UBI legislation. Anyone heard about concrete proposals for either lately? I don't disagree with him in either case, but PR talk is cheap.

Rideshare companies, Delivery trucks/drones, semi-trucks, etc. AI could replace folks in some professions like accounting or engineering. Trades are going to be way more difficult to replace humans in, like electrician, carpenter, plumber, HVAC, etc. Every job is different, different measurements, different houses, different materials, adapting to things not in the plans, etc.

UBI will happen one day, as long as it’s not more than someone could make working it shouldn’t be a problem. I work at a power plant, if I could make 75% or more of what I do right now just for not working I’d resign immediately and retire. Incentives will have to still exist to attract human workers where needed, better benefits, better retirement, higher pay, etc.
