It's so tragic to see how far Afghanistan has fallen thanks to religious fundamentalism. I'm not dogging Islam, any fundamentalist religion is toxic as hell.

(15,740 posts)I was surprised at the number of women I saw there who were wearing burqas (the full face covering, with just a mesh over the eyes to see through). That was in contrast to what I saw in Iran, although a lot of women there were wearing hijabs (and chadors as one went further east).

(4,607 posts)The pattern is the same in most countries. You have an urban, educated, cosmopolitan elite, and then you have the rural Trump base that is steeped in ignorance, religious fanaticism, and the most regressive aspects of the country's culture.

(2,218 posts)Look at the long sleeves with the above the knee but hardly mini-skirts. I don't believe for a second this was typical.
This is propaganda trying to convince the rest of the world that Afghan was right in step with the trend. They weren't.

I really didn't know anything about it except: There was a breed of dog called an Afghan hound and there was a crocheted throw called an Afghan...I think it's always been bit backwater...
I could tell you alot about Iran, but I would not even know where Afghanistan was on a map....

(3,606 posts)Mullah Omar (former Mujaheddin - supported by US to fight against Russia in Afghanistan) imported Saudi Wahhabism into Afghanistan.
He is dead now, but one of his Generals, Abdul Ghani Baradar (who was in prison in Pakistan until Trump made the deal that freed him) is the likely new head of the Taliban. This is extremely depressing. He is the guy who invented the coliseum murders of women who did not conform.
It seems hopeless.

And then I saw this article today, which does give me a little hope. If the new Taliban rejects wahhabism, then perhaps there is some hope for the good people of Afghanistan.

And if 15 of the 17 hijackers on 9/11 were Saudi, and Bin Laudin was Saudi, why the hell are we such good friends with the Saudis?
I never could understand this.
It is all corruption. The love of money and power. I'm so sick of it!
