(10,104 posts)I have a nephew who got fired for trying to talk girl(s?) out of abortion while working in a public school as a counselor. But a science teacher talking about science?

(9,041 posts)He sucks. I don't care what you think. Go tattle on me, then.
That is a lot of sentiment, but scientific ain't one of it.
I can't believe people are even slightly defending her. That is just not how you want a teacher comporting themselves.
We shouldn't defend people just because we like their politics. She was utterly unprofessional and taunting students. She's done.

(9,041 posts)She goes off the rails as the video goes on.
At least one student can be heard debating with the teacher, although it was not clear exactly what the student said. In response, Kinyon says: "You can believe what you want to believe, but keep it quiet in here because I'm probably going to make fun of you."
"That's pathetic that you think that," she adds later in the video as she and one student discuss climate change. "You're the problem with the world."
Kinyon also told her class homophobia would not be tolerated as she is the school's Gay-Straight Alliance adviser.
"If I hear you say a damn word about them [members of the LGBTQIA+ community], I will open a can, and I will make your life a living hell," she added.
Teachers do not talk to students like this and expect to keep their jobs.
And now she's on the Internet. Her teaching career is all done.

(32,599 posts)I'm 70 years old, I graduated high school in 1969. It was happening even back then, but it was kept quiet and under wraps. Teachers would be called on the carpet, or fined or their pay would be docked, they'd get an unpaid "vacation" - but they were punished for giving any "political" information in school even when it was the truth. Anything that sounded BAD for conservatives and GOOD for Liberals got smacked down quickly.
If a teacher persisted even after sanctions, well she or he was out. They were gone. Usually it happened after the end of the school year, and parents and students didn't know the reason. The job of every school board is to silence the "liberal" teachers, and they take that job seriously.

(9,041 posts)You don't bring your politics into the classroom like that. Sorry, no. As soon as she started in on, "I hate Donald Trump . . . I don't care what y'all think," she was all done.
Notice a student said right after, "This is a chemistry class!" And then the teacher taunts the student, "Then go tattle on me!"
WTF?
Someone this immature has no business teaching. I also like the drawn out, "suuuuuhcks," like a bored, petulant adolescent. How old is this teacher supposed to be?
It's fine if we agree with her sentiments. But not in the classroom. Not at the students. And definitely not over the students, once they start letting her know it's inappropriate.
She sealed her own fate. I wouldn't want someone like this around kids, either.

(34,008 posts)I am no longer in the high school classroom, but I am a certified secondary teacher who taught for 11 years.
Even though I agree with her sentiments, this woman's behavior was absolutely unacceptable.

(52,152 posts)while I could see warning her as opposed to firing her, she definitely deserved to get in trouble over what she did. It was out of line. Both in terms of what she was saying and how she was saying it.

(94,384 posts)Trump and Fox News have nothing to do with teaching chemistry, and a teacher shouldnt be imposing his/her political opinions on students.
I assume people wouldnt want a MAGA/QANON believer sharing personal opinions ina public school?
