(3,010 posts)And it is not just Hawaii but that is what we hear about. Most hospitals align regionally and beyond their state borders, so when say Idaho hospitals have an overcapacity issue due to a massive earthquake or Covid or anything, they have agreements and practiced protocols to divert new cases to neighboring WA or OR hospitals with more capacity and hopefully not the same level of issues. The islands, be that Hawaii or Canaries, are mostly on their own. And traditionally they have less built in hospital surge capacity be that because they never could afford to build more or never had the need. They were wise and suffered greatly economically by keeping people out. They worked the inverse and correct logic, I think to FL and SD and others who say, sure come on and enjoy Disney or Sturgis and they know full well when that is over, the large majority of those infected with Covid will have spent their $$$ in FL or SD but now go home and infect others and the cost of that does not stay, mostly, in FL or SD. It is an insidious and evil equation but for the likes of DeSantis and Noem it works just fine.

could not handle it. A few of years ago a couple we know moved to the Big Island, and she had a wrist/hand injury that needed ongoing care, which meant periodic flights to Oahu.
They really cant afford to have tourists bop in thinking rules dont apply to them in the middle of a pandemic.
